"Seeing the costumes up close, you actually see more to the story. It's a different form of viewing. The lens is your eye, and your eye can take in a whole lot more than what you experience on the big screen." - Ruth Costume Design, Inc., from her interview with 6 ABC Come see "Ruth E. There is so much to celebrate in 2026! We’re celebrating our 50th anniversary while the country celebrates its 250th. Meanwhile, Art Philly is marking the moment with their inaugural “What Now: 2026” festival, a celebration of art and artists across the city, and we are thrilled to partner with them!

The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) opened its doors in 1976, committed to exploring the Black experience through art, culture, and historical witness. Many of the projects do the same, whether it’s poet Yolanda Wisher's podcast, “Bicentennial Baby,” King Britt's Blacktronika dance happenings, or playwright Anna Deavere Smith’s “Basil Biggs,” a play that explores mines her family’s experience as free Black folks during the Civil War. Check out those incredible projects — and dozens more — and join us for a Juneteenth Jubilee Block Party, held on AAMP’s 50th anniversary! Learn more: https://www.aampmuseum.org/juneteenth-2026.html

Ruth E. Carter has her fair share of iconic costumes, but the Fly Guy costume from "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" is one visitors go out of their way to pose next to. Ruth Carter leaned into the peacock style of the 1970s with this costume, featuring platform shoes, wide-legged bell bottoms, and a bright yellow suit. Come see it for yourself this weekend: https://tockify.com/aampmuseum/detail/912/1762005600000

40 years ago in 1986, Jack T. Franklin (1922–2009) donated his entire collection of over 500,000 negatives and photographs to the African American Museum in Philadelphia. The collection includes photos of virtually every social, cultural, and political event in Philadelphia’s African American community during Jack T. Franklin’s lifetime, as well as the major events of the 1960s Civil Rights movement.
For example, the above photo documents The NAACP's protest campaign to desegregate Girard College in 1965.
