Beth Hessel, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia; Deborah Majka, Honorary Consul of Poland; and Peter Obst, historian and guest lecturer, gather following Obst’s presentation at the Athenaeum’s historic building in Philadelphia.
The Consular Corps Association of Philadelphia (CCAP) has partnered with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia to present an International Design Lecture Series titled “Power of Place”. Each month, a guest lecturer provides a different country’s interpretation of this theme. June’s speaker – historian Peter Obst – focused his comments on the work of Ralph Modjeski (1861 – 1940), the Polish-American civil engineer who oversaw the design and construction of nearly forty bridges that spanned the great rivers of North America. Most notably for Philadelphians, Modjeski designed the Benjamin Franklin Bridge which has spanned the Delaware River for 100 years. His company, Modjeski and Masters, continues to design bridges from its headquarters in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
