Penn Treaty Museum 200 Years Later...

The Great Elm at Shackamaxon fell in a storm on March 5, 1810. Join with us to ensure that the timeless story will never be forgotten.

The Penn Treaty Museum was established to bring world-wide awareness to the significance of the Treaty of Friendship between the Indigenous inhabitants of Shakamaxon and William Penn. Under the branches of this mighty tree that grew along the Delaware River, William Penn and Lenape Chief Tamanend made a Treaty of Friendship that many people believe represents the best of our human spirit. Two hund

red years later we will come together to commemorate these principles of fairness, peace and social justice symbolized by the Treaty Tree.

One of the most prized pieces currently on view at the Penn Treaty Museum is an intricate replica of the Wampum belt that Tamanend and representatives of the Lenni Lenape presented to William Penn over 340 years ago. Today, we know it as the Shackamaxon Treaty Belt, or the Treaty of Friendship Belt.

This wampum belt replica is on long-term loan to the museum and was woven by hand by our good friend and board member Pastor John Norwood. Here, Pastor Norwood explains all the symbols woven into the belt and why the story of the Shackamaxon Treaty Belt remains so important today.

Come see the Shackamaxon Treaty Belt replica and the rest of our collection on Wednesday afternoons, or contact us to set up a guided tour led by our team of volunteers!
