"We ain't waiting to jump into a fight today. We are currently in a fight." -

Sixty years after MLK led thousands to Soldier Field, the struggle for Black dignity, self-determination, and economic justice remains unfinished. From the classroom to the courtroom, the advances won during the 1960s Civil Rights movement are being systematically rolled back and weaponized against us.

The systems of state repression and economic inequality aren't just approaching-they are already in our communities...

We can't just play defense anymore. The real fight is about power: who controls the narrative, who controls the federal budget, and who controls the future of our communities. It's time to adapt historic tactics to today's political realities through mass mobilization, coalition governance, and community-rooted reparations.

What does true freedom look like after incarceration?

Listen to Marlon Chamberlain, Founding Executive Director of the Illinois Coalition to End Permanent Punishments (), as he reveals the hidden barrier that keeps millions of people trapped long after they've served their time.

Over 1,000 laws in Illinois permanently ban people with criminal records from basic freedoms. You can't work in hundreds of professions. Even after you've completed your time and paid your debt to society, these "permanent punishments" continue.

This isn't a side effect of incarceration-it's intentional policy designed to keep people down.

But this breakout session from the EAT and M4BL People's Assembly wasn't just about examining the barriers-it was about imagining and building a brand-new world.

Swipe through the clips above to hear directly from the participants as they collaboratively map out radical, real-world alternatives.

Rehabilitation isn't individual work—it's community work.
When someone you love comes home, don't shame them. Encourage them. Support them. Introduce them to people who've done the work.
Your belief in them changes everything.

⏱️ This 40-minute session breaks down EVERYTHING: identification barriers, healthcare navigation, education as transformation, and how to actually support people in reentry.

What's a HEALED Chicago look like?

THE BIG PAYBACK PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY held conversation and action planning to answer that very question.

Reparations. Restoration. Repair.

Community leaders, survivors, and organizers dive deep into what it actually takes to heal our communities. We are completely smashing the myth that reparations are an impossible dream.

"Restitution is about restoring us to our former state." 🏛️

True restoration isn’t a handout—it’s about giving back the land, the resources, and the dignity that was systematically stripped away in the first place. It means:

🧠 Prioritizing Mental Health & Rehabilitation: Taking collective responsibility to look out for our brothers, sisters, and cousins to ensure healing is accessible.

🛑 Ending Permanent Punishments: Demanding a clean slate. If someone has already served their time, they should no longer be forced to suffer legal and economic consequences.

Wity-led systems of care, stewardship, and leadership so our people are never again systematically harmed, excluded, or disinvested.

According to Citigroup, the U.S. economy lost $16 trillion because of racism towards Black Americans from 2000-2020. But you're STILL against reparations? Okay.

For those of you who get it, meet us at 5635 W. Corcoran Place in Chicago on Saturday, May 30th, from 11am-3pm. See you there. 🫡

"Art is not just for entertainment; it is a tool for healing and transformation." ✊🏾✨

We are thrilled to announce that award-winning spoken word artist, speaker, and 3x published author K-Love () will be joining us at the Big Payback People’s Assembly on May 30th!

Affectionately known as the "Mother of the Southside," K-Love’s global voice has captivated audiences from Chicago to President Barack Obama. But her most vital work happens right here on the ground. Through her specialized Recovery Program, she works directly with men recovering from drug addiction, supports formerly incarcerated individuals through reentry programs, and leads her profound Scars Workshop to facilitate deep emotional restoration.

The fight for drug war reparations requires our voices, our stories, and our collective healing. Don't miss this powerful convening.

Registration is officially OPEN! Secure your spot to hear from K-Love and help us build a worker-powered future. Link in bio and below to register! 🔗
