Student spotlight
Jazmine Silva Sanchez student at Community College of Philadelphia

This year, I traveled alone to Mexico for the first time. Though I was anxious, I reconnected with my Indigenous roots and the culture my family carried to the United States.

During my stay there, I experienced culture through art, dance, and family traditions, it reminded me how migration can separate families from their history.

Growing up at Taller Puertorriqueño also shaped me. Their commitment to preserving culture inspired me to protect my own heritage.

Now, I have the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico with my mentors and peers to learn from artists and leaders I hope to also contribute observing our cultures together🇵🇷🇲🇽♥️

Please consider supporting this journey and helping Jazzy share her story.

This June, our students travel to Puerto Rico for our Seguimos Aquí: Puerto Rico, Our Home 🇵🇷 project, celebrating 250 years of America and Puerto Rico being here for 172 of those years.
Through photography and storytelling, they’ll document the island and connect with culture, history, and community.
We need your help now—every donation is crucial to cover students’ equipment, transportation, and meals. Make a difference today.

ICYMI: John B. Stetson Middle School is fighting once again - it's been a long, rocky road from getting passed back and forth between the school district and charter management, building disrepair, and strained resources. Now a closing could be imminent. Who better to document the experience than PWB students in the after school video club. Guidance from teachers Tony Rocco and Adam Cooper-Terán.

PWB caps a remarkable year of youth-driven photo and video storytelling with the first of may profiles on change makers in our community. Thanks to the support of City of Philadelphia Government Anti-Violence Community Partnership grant, our instructors guided youth on documenting the positive impact Thomas & Woods Foundation Summer Basketball Camp has had for the past 13 years.

Enjoy this short documentary, including perspectives from youth who picked up a camera for the first time to share their views.
