DonCARES of Philadelphia, Inc. We are a coalition of college students of color who advocate for high school students in North Philadelphia. We currently serve the North Philadelphia area.

DonCARES of Philadelphia is a community organization of college students of color from Philadelphia who strive to better themselves through community service, education workshops, and who have a desire to give back to their community. Members advocate for youth by pledging to become a mentor and an advocate to inner-city youth and by promoting education through educational workshops in inner-city schools. We were founded in September, 2015 and are currently a public organization. As the goal of DonCARES, mentors will act as positive role-models who will promote education as an important aspect of self-advancement to inner-city youth while countering the false perceptions made against us by ardently working to improve ourselves through service, fellowship, self-appreciation and understanding for one another.

I’m on a journey to discover where I come from—and who my biological family is.

If you’re new here, I’m Donovan. I’m 31, an educator, a husband, and in the final year of my doctoral program. I’m originally from Philadelphia and now live in the DMV with my wife.

I was born into foster care and separated from my biological family at birth. For much of my life, there have been pieces of my story I simply haven’t known.

But now, at 31, I finally feel the confidence and peace to take a step I’ve thought about for a long time: learning more about my beginnings and, potentially, finding my biological family.

I don’t know exactly where this journey will lead or what I’ll discover along the way. But I’m ready to find out.

Come with me as I search for the missing pieces of my story. 🤎

My story is unique, but my struggle is not.

I was born into the foster care system, separated from my birth family, and for 31 years, I knew very little about from whence I came.

Today, I took the first steps toward mailing off the paperwork to request my unamended birth certificate, the record of who I was before I became Donovan Forrest.

It’s a document that could confirm some of what I already know while potentially opening the door to so much more: names, history, connections, and a deeper understanding of the cloth I’m cut from.

For so much of my life, pieces of my beginning have been unknown to me. Now, I’m choosing to seek them out.

I’m excited for the journey, and for whatever I may discover along the way.

During the Spring Semester we discussed college fit using the P.L.A.C.E. framework (program, location, atmosphere, cost, and environment) for our desired admission outcomes.

April 25th marked the final class of the Spring semester at Georgetown University — and I’m leaving full.

Over the past eight weeks, our students built professional resumes, engaged with industry professionals, explored healthy relationships, confronted the role of mental health in college success, and wrestled with what college fit really means for them.

They didn’t just prep for college. They started preparing for themselves.
That’s the work. That’s why I show up.
