According to Sidney Bechet's biographer John Chilton, he made regular visits to Philly in 1946 and 1947 for a promoter named Sammy Price. In 1949 and 1950 he had a residency at the Swing Rendezvous in the Hotel Senator. Looks like it was a favored destination!

Bobby Timmons: The Soul Behind the Sound
Born: December 19, 1935 | Died: March 1, 1974

Bobby Timmons grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His family was filled with musicians and ministers. He started playing piano at just six years old. His grandfather's church shaped his deep, soulful style. Gospel music lived in every note he played.

Timmons moved to New York City at just nineteen. He quickly landed gigs with Art Blakey and Cannonball Adderley. He wrote "Moanin'" for Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1958. That song became one of the most beloved jazz themes ever. He also wrote "This Here," making Cannonball Adderley's band an overnight sensation.

Two recordings stand above the rest. Moanin' by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers landed on Blue Note Records in 1958. The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco arrived in 1959. Timmons powered both records with his driving, church-rooted piano style. These albums reshaped jazz permanently.

Timmons passed away in 1974 at only thirty-eight years old. His compositions are still played around the world today. Pianists like Ramsey Lewis carried his deep influence forward. He gave jazz a sound rooted in truth and raw emotion. Bobby Timmons proved that honest music never goes out of style.
