Hours of planning go in to preparing the staff and teens to facilitate a FAB experience on the Playstreets and at the parks/playgrounds.

This was the start of what’s developed into our BEX DECKS, a tool that we use for training & facilitation. Teens carry them with them so they always have access to the games & directions, and they include tips for making games harder or easier.

You can see how Jada has hers and is ready to go out and facilitate and lead. And you can see Moth being coached by Karnel using the Bex Deck.

Reading is such an important part of summer & our teen Play Captains ALWAYS have books with them to give away to children so they can create home libraries.

What’s a favorite book you remember from your summer as a child or teen?

Coined after the Block Captain and Jr. Block Captain roles, the Play Captain Initiative is a workforce development and civic-engagement initiative with the mission to empower and train teens in leadership, playful learning and facilitation to make the Playstreets, playgrounds and neighborhoods of Philadelphia more playful. The program runs year-round with our signature programming taking place during the summer.

In 2021, the Play Captain Initiative was selected as a National Summer Learning Association Excellence in Learning awardee.

The Initiative can be replicated for other cities. Contact us to learn how: [email protected]

Last week, our Board of Directors launched their very first collective fundraising campaign in celebration of City Council's recent Resolution celebrating our 10 year anniversary.

We are a little more than 1/3 of the way, there, but need to raise another $2,100 by the end of the day June 1st as they will match dollar for dollar up to $3,500 -- which could mean $7,000 for FYP.

Please consider making a donation in any amount that is meaningful to you, and help the board have a successful first fundraising campaign.

We still talk about from 2019 and that time the Play Captains almost ran on to the Parkway! Such a fun way to bring all our teens together.

Did you know that in 2019, we had Play Captains facilitating activities in 5 different neighborhoods?

FREE BEX DECKS
We have hundreds of mis-matched decks because they've changed over the years as we've added or eliminated various games, cards, sections, etc. and we want to give them for FREE to anyone who would like to use them for their (summer) programming.

In college I was required to take a study skills class, in which I learned about the magic of flash cards. I became hooked on using index cards for all means of studying, outlining and preparing. In fact, I wrote my graduate thesis using hundreds of index cards.

So, it was natural that 10 years ago, as I was preparing for our first summer of the Play Captain Initiative and needed a tool to help me outline, plan and facilitate the training content, that I would turn to index cards, which have become known as BEX DECKS.

Initially starting out as hand written cards, then cards with stickers, they are now fully designed and organized decks with various sections, which are both part of our training and also implementation on the Playstreets & at the Playgrounds.

They are more effective than having a "manual" of games, because they fit in your palm, can be clipped to your belt or backpack and can be re-organized, adding or eliminating cards as needed. And because they are 'analogue' as opposed to an app, people can - and do- write their own notes, reflections and ideas in them to help deepen learning.

We've been hired by other organizations to create customized BEX DECKS that they can use for their respective project. For example, we worked with Lutheran Settlement House to create a Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) deck for their volunteers to use to support engagement and tutoring.

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation use a similar version to the deck we use to train their summer youth employees who work at their day camps.

And now, YOU CAN HAVE BEX DECKS TOO.

We have hundreds of mis-matched decks because they've changed over the years as we've added or eliminated various games, cards, sections, etc. and we want to give them for FREE to anyone who would like to use them for their (summer) programming.

These decks include the following sections (in total or in part):
*Tips & Tricks: for facilitation, child development, playful learning & engagement
*Safety: Mandated reporting, safe play
*Games: High, low & medium level of activity, circle games, tag games, & more
*Songs: Lyrics to all kinds of camp songs
*Motivation: Quotes + reflection questions to help keep motivation high
*Reflection: Prompts for debrief and reflection at the end of the day or the end of the week

Here are the 'catches':
You have to come pick them up, we can not deliver or ship.
First come, first serve.
Five decks per organization/individual.
Must be picked up bu June 15th.

Please email me: [email protected] if you'd like to have some Bex Decks of your own.
