FREE BEX DECKS
We have hundreds of mis-matched decks because they've changed over the years as we've added or eliminated various games, cards, sections, etc. and we want to give them for FREE to anyone who would like to use them for their (summer) programming.
In college I was required to take a study skills class, in which I learned about the magic of flash cards. I became hooked on using index cards for all means of studying, outlining and preparing. In fact, I wrote my graduate thesis using hundreds of index cards.
So, it was natural that 10 years ago, as I was preparing for our first summer of the Play Captain Initiative and needed a tool to help me outline, plan and facilitate the training content, that I would turn to index cards, which have become known as BEX DECKS.
Initially starting out as hand written cards, then cards with stickers, they are now fully designed and organized decks with various sections, which are both part of our training and also implementation on the Playstreets & at the Playgrounds.
They are more effective than having a "manual" of games, because they fit in your palm, can be clipped to your belt or backpack and can be re-organized, adding or eliminating cards as needed. And because they are 'analogue' as opposed to an app, people can - and do- write their own notes, reflections and ideas in them to help deepen learning.
We've been hired by other organizations to create customized BEX DECKS that they can use for their respective project. For example, we worked with Lutheran Settlement House to create a Social & Emotional Learning (SEL) deck for their volunteers to use to support engagement and tutoring.
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation use a similar version to the deck we use to train their summer youth employees who work at their day camps.
And now, YOU CAN HAVE BEX DECKS TOO.
