In 1943, a 17-year-old Coltrane had relocated­ from his birthplace in North Carolina, coming north with his family in the latter half of the Great Migration. By 1952, he paid a little over $5,000 for a three-story brick home in Strawberry Mansion for him and his family. That house still stands, and next door is where the centennial begins.

Philly is where he studied, grew, and built the community that shaped one of the most enduring legacies in American music. Now the city he chose is honoring him with a citywide celebration, launching Thursday, July 23 at 10:30 AM at The Yard on John Coltrane Street, 1515-17 N. 33rd Street.⁣⁣⠀
