ANKA Cooperative We empower Syrian refugees in Turkey through cultural integration and life skills training in ethical workplaces with fair compensation and fulfilling work

ANKA in Turkish | ANQA in Arabic (عنقاء) Refers to an ancient mythical bird which obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. The legendary motif has often been woven into the field and borders of carpets throughout the region since the dawn of the craft. The motif bird is commonly believed to represent rebirth after a significant struggle. Our name was inspired by a sketch draw

n by a Syrian refugee who sketched of a phoenix bird rising from the flames. One wing was colored the Turkish flag, the other, the free Syrian flag. The heartfelt image symbolizes the struggle, hope, and partnership of the women and The Anka Cooperative. In both Turkish and Arabic, ‘Anka’ translates to ‘Phoenix’. The Anka Cooperative empowers Syrian women refugees by teaching them transferable skills, providing them dignifying work, and enabling cultural integration into their new society through the creation of fine carpets and traditional crafts.

Cate Blanchett speaks about her experience helping a family of Syrian refugees.

”There’s so much misinformation about refugees. I think that’s part of the thing that really upsets me most from my experience in the field. These very resilient, resourceful, generous people who have been forced to flee, but yet they’re vilified often in the media. It doesn’t really connect with the actual people that I’ve met"

Residents of Antigonish said they take pride in seeing their town become a beacon of how openness pays back in spades.

"We're just so happy to have them here, and so happy that they have succeeded. They're really an example for a whole lot of people," said 82-year-old Pat Watson. "We welcomed them, and now they're part of this community, and they're helping to welcome everybody else."

Members of the community were given tours of Peace by Chocolate’s new factory in Antigonish

At the Anka Cooperative we believe that Empowerment through Employment, Cultural Integration, Education & Awareness are the answers to helping address the refugee crisis.

Adjusting to a new country and it’s culture is a major hardship and significant obstacle for refugees. Governments struggle with how to integrate so many individuals who often don’t know the local language, customs or culture.

The Anka Cooperative helps refugees learn Turkish language, culture and customs by interacting daily with Turkish trainers. We partner with other charities to expand our reach beyond the refugee camps. The weavers love their work, not only for the income it offers, but also for the companionship and camaraderie it engenders and the cultural integration it provides.

The Three Pillars of The Anka Cooperative We believe that Empowerment through Employment, Cultural Integration, Education & Awareness are the answers to helping address the refugee crisis. Empowerment Through Employment We work with Syrian refugees to create a dignified path to self-empowerment thro...
