Paralegals play an invaluable role, offering expertise and support that strengthen legal services and bridge access to justice. They bring precision, dedication, and a commitment to each case, ensuring clients receive thorough, well-prepared legal help. However, paralegals do not provide legal advice, represent clients in court, or establish attorney-client relationships. Their work is performed under the supervision of a licensed attorney, ensuring all actions comply with legal and ethical standards.

Collaboration is vital to the EJC’s mission, bringing together diverse perspectives to create impactful, community-centered solutions. By partnering with civil legal service providers, support organizations, and public sector representatives, we ensure that resources are accessible and equitable. This collective effort bridges gaps that no single entity could address alone, amplifying our impact on Philadelphia’s communities. At the EJC, collaboration transforms vision into action, making justice not just an ideal but a shared reality.

An affidavit is a written statement sworn under oath or affirmation to be true, often used as evidence in court. It’s a key document in many legal proceedings, where the signer is legally bound to the truth of their statement.
An affidavit is more than words on paper—it's a sworn commitment to the truth.

True justice removes barriers that create inequality, making it possible for all people to thrive. It protects rights and addresses discrimination, ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to pursue their potential. Without true justice, divisions grow, and trust in society weakens. Achieving true justice strengthens communities, creating a foundation for a more inclusive and resilient future.

Equity is essential in justice because it ensures that all individuals can access fair treatment and protection regardless of their background or circumstances. Unlike equality, which offers the same support to everyone, equity recognizes and addresses unique barriers people face, from language to financial challenges. This approach helps dismantle systemic inequalities, allowing marginalized communities to exercise their rights fully. By leveling the playing field, equity in justice fosters a more inclusive and balanced society. It builds trust in the legal system, showing people that their unique needs matter. Ultimately, equity promotes true justice, making communities stronger and more resilient.

Justice begins with participation, not silence. It’s crucial to respond to any lawsuit, even without a lawyer. Failing to respond may lead to a default judgment against you, which could have serious legal consequences. Legal representation can greatly improve your chances, but your response is essential to protect your rights. To learn more, visit our website: https://www.philaequaljusticecenter.org/

A judge’s role isn’t just to oversee the courtroom; it's to uphold the integrity of justice and ensure a fair process for all. Beyond simply presiding over court proceedings, a judge ensures fairness, interprets the law, and may even decide the case if there is no jury. Judges play a crucial role in safeguarding justice by making impartial decisions based on legal principles, which directly impact the outcomes of disputes.

The new Philadelphia Equal Justice Center

The Equal Justice Center (EJC) embodies the Philadelphia legal community's commitment to the promise of equal access to justice. The EJC was initiated by the Philadelphia Bar Foundation in conjunction with the development of 800-30 Vine Street, managed by Pennrose. Award-winning architectural firm WRT is designing the EJC building in close consultation with the local community. Other important partners, including Regional Housing Legal Services, have dedicated countless hours to make this project a reality.
