The significance of Election Day extends beyond the simple act of casting a ballot. While we acknowledge the ability to participate in voting, we also recognize the struggles for justice and inclusion that have been overcome to get to where we are today—such as racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and more. While progress has been made, hurdles still exist that impact voting—accessibility issues, lack of reliable information, language barriers, and more. Check in on friends, family, and neighbors, share resources, and encourage everyone to make their voices heard and their votes counted. Today is a reminder that democracy must be actively participated in to create change, improve conditions, and maintain rights. The members of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority, Inc. strongly encourage you to exercise your right to vote!

DĂa de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) is a vibrant holiday that celebrates and honors the cyclical relationship between life and death. Although predominantly observed in Mexico, different countries and cultures partake in similar festivities. This celebration is rooted in Indigenous traditions of Mesoamerica. During DĂa de los Mu***os, families create altars (ofrendas) to welcome the spirits of their ancestors. These altars can be decorated with items such as photographs, favorite foods, sugar skulls, candles, marigold flowers, and pan de mu**to (bread of the dead). It is believed that during these days, the spirits of the deceased return to the world of the living to enjoy the offerings and be with their families. We acknowledge this time which honors reunion, remembrance, joy, and the lives of deceased loved ones. ***os

One of the spookiest nights of the year—hello Halloween! This is not only a fun and festive time, but did you know about some of its rich history and traditions?

Over 2,000 years ago, in areas such as present-day Ireland, the United Kingdom, and northern France, people believed that on the night of October 31st, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam. To protect themselves, they lit bonfires and wore costumes to confuse the wandering ghosts. When immigrants brought these customs to America, many traditions evolved into the Halloween we know today.

Communities now come together to host events like haunted houses, neighborhood trick-or-treating, and festivals, making Halloween a time to connect with friends and neighbors. Whether you’re carving pumpkins, wearing costumes, or indulging in candy, we hope you enjoy your —sprinkles of and all!

The month of October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We highlight the reality of severe intimate partner violence and the experiences of those affected. It’s important to educate ourselves on the signs of abuse and support others in any way we can. Please remember, resources exist: hotlines, shelters, and counseling services are available to help. Let us stand together to break the silence and create a safer community for everyone. Love should not hurt.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Early detection can save lives—but what does early detection look like? Regular mammograms can help detect and treat cancer in its early stages. Additionally, performing self-examinations allows you to notice any changes in your body. Check in with yourself, spread awareness, and stay informed! 💗
