As the surging violence continues to impact children and teens in Philly, many rec centers are encouraging more families to take advantage of summer camp programs this year. NBC10’s Brian Sheehan has more details on these programs and how to get involved.

"I have always loved the water and swimming - my grandpop made it a point to teach me how to swim and be safe while in the ocean. When I was around 8 my parents signed me up for Swim for Life camp at Samuel Pool and the rest is history. I stayed in Swim for Life until I aged out at 15, and at the end of that summer they certified us to be lifeguards and I was a lifeguard at Samuel!

"Lifeguarding teaches you responsibility not only for yourself but also for others' well being and safety. When you are up in the guard chair or monitoring the deck the patrons who are swimming in the pool are relying on you to keep them safe. You also get to meet people from the community that you may not have met otherwise: I worked at Samuel from 2009-2015, and year after year I would look forward to seeing the regulars that would come back to swim each summer and catching up with them to see how their year went.

"When I graduated from college my supervisor, Jamie Miller, told me about the ARL test that was coming out at the end of the summer and that I should take it. So I did and was hired in March of 2016 and have been here ever since! I am very passionate about being a lifeguard: it's a great experience to meet new people, to get involved in your community, it pays well and it's a fun summer job that can lead to a lot of other opportunities."
