William Goldsby is a returning citizen from the Jim Crow era, legally blind and now on the eve of his 73 Birthday. William inherited 1808 Tioga St. in 1996 to house men coming home from prison. Over the years, the building has opened its doors to house people with particular circumstances - single moms with children who have no credit, returning citizens who are retired, and people otherwise excluded from renting or housing programs. The first floor of the building has served as the headquarters for Reconstruction Inc , an organization guided by the philosophy of "changing ourselves to change the world and uniting the many to engage the few.“
1808 is a 100-year-old apartment building in Philadelphia that has three floors and, until January of 2022, had an old boiler and hot water system. In January, the boiler caught fire which cut off the heat and hot water. As these emergency repairs went underway, we realized the plumbing was also failing. All of this set William back $12,000. Simultaneously, two tenants moved out, creating a reduction of income and the bills got very backed up.
In order to keep the utilities on, a member of Let's Get Free paid the outstanding bills with a credit card and we need to pay that back before the interest goes out of control.
