Pennsylvania has as many as 700,000 abandoned oil and gas wells and many of them sit in Westmoreland County. They leak methane, threaten our water, and put families at risk.

On Wednesday night, labor, environmental, and economic leaders came together with one message: plugging these wells can protect our communities AND create family-sustaining union jobs.

The states proposed $19 million investment is an important first start, but there’s more work to do. Thank you to Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Angela Ferritto, Conservation Voters of PA Political & Legislative Director Katie Blume, executive director emeritus at Keystone Research Center and co-director of ReImagine Appalachia Stephen Herzenberg, President of the Greater Westmoreland Central Labor Council Michael Hartung, and everyone who joined us.

Meet our panelist: Katie Blume

Katie is the Political & Legislative Director for Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania. In her current professional life, Katie has played an integral role in CVPA’s accountability, advocacy, winning electoral programming, and helped to build the Blue-Green Working Group. She also chairs the PA Clean Power Coalition, previously served on the Climate Power PA Advisory Board, is on the board of Fairness PA, and chairs the LEAD PA c4 Board. In her personal time, she is chair emeritus for Centre Safe in Centre County, and currently serves as the President of the Millheim Borough Council. She likes a good "crick sit" on a hot day with a good book.

Meet our panelist: Stephen Herzenberg

Stephen holds a Ph.D. in economics from MIT and is an economist and executive director emeritus at Keystone Research Center (KRC), as well as co-director of ReImagine Appalachia. Over his 40-year career, his research has focused on the U.S. and global auto industry; the rise of the service-dominated new economy and how to achieve shared prosperity within it; the challenges unions face adapting to the new economy; workforce and economic development; state-level industrial policy; and industry studies, including of manufacturing, construction, early childhood education, and long-term care. and state policy issues generally.

Before KRC, Stephen worked at the US Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) and served as assistant to the chief US negotiator of the labor side agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement.
