This 2026 Nancy-Beth Sheerr Service Award, in recognition of exceptional leadership and service, was awarded to Melanie Sheerr Backlund, AB ‘00, HCP Communications and Membership, President Emerita (Economics Concentrator, Mass Hall, Mather House, MBA, The Baldwin School, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth; MEng, Supply Chain, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.) The award was presented by Justin Martino, HCP President, and Jenna McNeill, HCP Secretary, at the Harvard Club of Philadelphia's State of Club: Annual Meeting & Dinner, which was held this year at The Racquet Club of Philadelphia.

Nancy-Beth Sheerr Service Award:
In 2023, we lost a beloved member of our alumni community here in Philadelphia when Nancy-Beth Sheerr passed away far too soon.

A Radcliffe class of 1971 graduate and past president of our club, Nancy-Beth served on various educational boards, ultimately chairing the boards of trustees at two of her beloved alma maters – Radcliffe College and The Baldwin School. As the last Chair of Radcliffe College, she was instrumental in the merger of Harvard and Radcliffe in 1999 and the formation of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, where she sat on the Dean’s Advisory Council until her death. Her dedication to Harvard was recognized by her receipt of the Harvard Medal in 2021, given to those who have demonstrated extraordinary service to the University, and the Harvard Alumni Association Award in 2010, which recognizes outstanding service to the University through alumni activities.

Nancy-Beth Sheerr was fond of saying of herself, she wasn’t someone who had the money to rename a dorm or endow a chair, but her contributions were her time, her talent, and her energy, and in doing that, she was unsurpassed. And so when someone special like that is lost, we felt it appropriate to honor them and continue to pass the torch forward and recognize a member of the community who has embodied so many of the same ideals that Nancy-Beth did.

Past Award Recipients:
2024 David Chen, MAR '99, MAUD '99
2025 Jenna McNeill, AB '95

THE HARVARD CLUB OF PHILADELPHIA just held its Annual Meeting & Dinner at the RCOP. The main topic of the evening was community engagement and philanthropy.

There is some interesting history around the connections between Harvard, the Widener Family, and The Racquet Club of Philadelphia

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia was co-founded in 1905 by George D. Widener (1861-1912). He commissioned the architect Horace Trumbauer to design the signature Beaux-Arts club building, which opened in 1907. RMS Titanic passenger, Harry Elkins Widener (1885-1912), a 27-year-old Philadelphia businessman and book collector who graduated from Harvard College in 1907, perished in the boat’s sinking in 1912, along with his father, George D. Widener. Harry’s mother, Eleanor Elkins Widener (1862-1937) survived, floating to safety aboard lifeboat No. 4. Not long after the Titanic went down, the Harry Elkins Widener Memorial Library went up at Harvard, thanks to a $2 million donation from his grieving mother. Harry’s collection of 3,000 rare books, that had been kept at Lynnewood Hall, the family estate in Elkins Park built by his grandfather Peter Arrell Browne Widener (1834-1915), formed the basis for the library at Harvard. Horace Trumbauer was also commissioned to design Widener Library.

Harry’s grandfather Peter Arrell Browne Widener’s fortune began with a $50,000 government contract to supply meat to the Union Army around Philadelphia during the Civil War. This enabled him to become a founding partner of the Philadelphia Traction Company that built public transport systems in Philadelphia, New York and Chicago. He then became a principal partner in U.S. Steel and the American To***co Company, director of International Mercantile Marine Company, and accumulated substantial holdings in B&O Railroad, Philadelphia Reading Company, and Standard Oil. He also served as the Philadelphia City Treasurer from 1870 to 1877. He accrued a fortune of $100 million that placed him alongside the Astors and the Vanderbilts. Today, he is recognized as one of the 100 wealthiest Americans to have ever lived. Despite his fortune, he died broken-hearted after his son and grandson were killed on the Titanic.

Widener Family philanthropy also includes The Widener Memorial School, Widener University, the iconic LOVE sculpture in Center City, Philadelphia, and the donation of the entirety of their priceless art collection to the National Gallery in Washington, D.C. To this day, their art comprises a bulk of that museum’s permanent collection, numbering over 2000 works.
