Modero & Company

We are a community group with a mission to preserve and promote the traditional Indonesian culture through dance, food, and events for social change.

We are a Philadelphia-based traditional Indonesian community dance group, though one with an international profile. Founded by Sinta Penyami Storms, Modero is an Indonesian culture torch bearer in the greater Philadelphia area.

In West Javanese dance, mastering Doyong is essential. Doyong, the subtle, rhythmic tilting and swaying of the head and body, creates the signature grace, elegance, and grounded character of Sundanese dance. Learning it trains a dancer's musicality, balance, and control, allowing them to embody the feeling of the kendang and _gamelan_ rather than just following the steps.

Through a dynamic blend of discussions, performances, and immersive events, Modero inspires connection and leaves a lasting impact on all who participate. Crucially, Modero is also a welcoming and inclusive space where q***r Indonesians can freely express themselves, finding belonging and empowerment in the shared celebration of identity and culture. By honoring tradition while embracing contemporary voices, Modero fosters a living, breathing tapestry of Indonesian culture that resonates far beyond its Philadelphia roots.
