“How do you feel when you knit, and who taught you how to knit?”

“Well, it’s a form of entertainment that you use as a distraction to not take naps, or to not be lazy, and it helps us with things, you know, to buy whatever little thing we may need. My mom kept us busy in the sierra. I learned when I was very little, since the mothers didn’t let us be lazy. I would gather sticks in the fields and I would try to learn how to knit with those - we would just ask the oldest girl to teach us. Then, when my mom saw that I finally knew how to knit well, she finally gave me string. Because if we didn’t prove it, we would have to go see the sheep.”

“For their wool??”

“Yes, we would take the wool, wash it in secret, and then knit with it. But when our mom saw that we could actually do it, she would eventually give us the string.” ~Irma, May 2015.

“What was the happiest moment of your life?”

“The moment when I realized that I have children and that, little by little, I am bringing them forward and making it possible for them to have a profession someday. I feel happy because I know that even though I won’t be able to leave behind material possessions for them, I will be able to leave them with their studies. That’s the most important thing for me, for my kids to study, and for them to have what I didn’t have. Every day is happy for me because I know that they are okay, that they have their health, that they have food, and that they have their parents. That’s what makes me happy every day of my life, that they are going down a good path. I want them to be better than me and better than who they were yesterday. I want them to learn more things every day, and to be good members of society. I feel proud to say that my daughter is studying, that my daughter will be somebody in life, that my children are progressing. That’s what I can look at and be happy about. Even though there’s never enough money, this is what makes me happy.” ~Katia, May 2015

“Tell me about one of your dreams.”

“My dream is to have a prettier house! Haha. No, not really. What’s important here is to live as a family. Even though it’s a humble abode, the hearts are big here between family, living together, calmly, without problems, without fights, and with the basics - food and education for the children. Even though paying for school can be hard sometimes, I want them to be professionals and to have good careers. Sometimes, my daughter Vallery says she doesn’t want to bring friends over because she’s ashamed of our little spot, haha. But...this is how we live, right? So I tell her, ‘Little daughter, we have to hope that someday we can do something better, and have something nicer.’ But like I told you, what’s really important to me is living calmly here, with my family, and with you all, sharing ourselves and coexisting with everyone.”
