A new mural is coming to Mt. Airy! And your dog could be featured in it 🐶 Submit photos of your furry friend via the QR code for a chance to have your dog included in a canine appreciation mural by Emily White coming to the Engine 9 / Ladder 21 fire station at Germantown Ave. & Carpenter Lane.

After successfully adding three murals to the commercial corridor last year, the Mt. Airy BID .airy.bid is excited to start this new mural! The site will also gain a pocket park thanks to funding for both from Mural Arts, the City of Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

🚒 The new mural draws from a beloved image at the fire station: a Dalmatian wearing a firefighter’s helmet and posed proudly beside a fire extinguisher. Did you know that Dalmatians once played an active role in firefighting—running alongside horse-drawn fire carts, clearing the way, and guarding equipment at the scene?

While most dogs today no longer serve in such formal working roles, they continue to play a vital—if often unrecognized—part in our communities. Dogs bring neighbors together. They get us outside, walking and talking. They help transform streets into shared spaces and strangers into familiar faces. In that way, they help create safer, friendlier neighborhoods. 🐾
