Today we remember Police Officer Charles Dewees who was killed on January 12, 1918, when the horses pulling his patrol wagon were spooked by a sheet of paper that blew against their legs on Germantown Avenue, in front of the police station. He was thrown to the paving and suffered a broken neck.

Officer Dewees served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 28 years. He was survived by his wife and two sons, who were serving in the Army in World War I.

Today we remember Park Guard William Doyle who succumbed to injuries on January 8, 1945, sustained three days earlier when he was thrown from his horse in West Park.

While on patrol, Guard Doyle noticed a large group of people rushing towards Concourse Lake. This sort of activity usually indicated someone had fallen through the ice. As Guard Doyle attempted to respond to the scene, his horse slipped on the snowy road, and Guard Doyle was thrown to the ground.

He suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Lankenau Hospital, where he later died.

Park Guard Doyle had served with the Fairmount Park Police Department for 21 years. He was survived by his two daughters and a grandson.

Today we remember Police Officer Anthony Johnson who suffered a fatal heart attack on January 7, 2003, after struggling with a suspect at Overbrook High School at about 1700 hours.

Officer Johnson, who volunteered as a part-time basketball coach, was in the gym for team photographs when a student came in and created a disturbance. The student refused to leave, and as Officer Johnson escorted him out of the gym, the boy took a swing at him and started to struggle. During the struggle, Officer Johnson was able to get handcuffs on the suspect before collapsing.

After Officer Johnson collapsed the handcuffed suspect fled as bystanders came to his aid. He was transported to Lankenau Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was apprehended shortly after 9:00 pm and charged with assaulting a police officer.

Officer Johnson had served with the Philadelphia Police Department for 16-1/2 and was assigned to the Southwest Detective Division.
