We are community members and gardeners committed to preserving the St. The garden has been around for approximately fifteen years on St. Bernard Street which is between 49th and 50th, between Springfield and Chester Ave. The site was previously dilapidated homes which had been fire damaged. Community members worked to have the homes demolished then turned the site into the garden. Through the year
s raised beds were built, fruit trees planted, watering systems installed, shed and tools purchased/ donated, the street and adjacent areas cleaned up, and many many people have contributed to it’s transformation to an urban oasis! We recently learned with only few days notice that the property that most of the garden sits on is up for sheriff’s sale. We were able to get the sale postponed but still have an uphill battle to maintain the garden. Bernard Community Garden formed to protect the garden. We are currently working with City Council Woman Jannie Blackwell, pro bono lawyers, and other community groups and organizers to do all we can to prevent the garden from getting developed. We can use as much support as we can get, so feel free to contact us at [email protected].
