Before Mavis Staples takes the Ellis Theater stage this October, we’re looking back at a friendship that has meant so much to Marty Stuart.

It began with the Staple Singers’ “Uncloudy Day” and grew into a lifelong bond with Pops, Mavis, Cleotha, Yvonne and Pervis Staples.

After Pops passed away, the Staples gifted Marty his guitar, a piece that remains one of the most meaningful in his collection.

Country music superstar Lainey Wilson is coming to the Ellis Theater for TWO special acoustic fundraiser performances on Tuesday, October 20, 2026!

Before it became a guest book of names, this mandolin was one of Marty Stuart’s proudest possessions.

His mother co-signed a bank note so he could buy it when he first came to Nashville. Years later, Johnny Cash carved his initials, a cross, and his name into the back.

The mandolin eventually became a place for others to leave their names, too. Do you recognize any names?🎻
