Last call!!! If you've been to the center lately you know all about our Anniversary trip to Lancaster County on November 18th. We have already filled one bus and have had a great interest in a second bus. The bus company is requiring us to commit to a second bus by next week. We currently have 1/2 the amount of people we need. If you were planning on going, please make your $20 deposit ASAP!! The deadline is Wednesday, 10/12! Representatives from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health will be at the center today, 7/6, from 11am-12pm to give a presentation about staying safe from COVID-19 this summer. Information about vaccination and boosters will be given. A clinician will give a demonstration of using a home test, and we will have free home tests for seniors. If you can't make it today, they will also have an information table here at the center from 9am-12 pm, Fridays, 7/15, 22, & 29. Come on by!

Happy Juneteenth! On this day we commemorate the anniversary of the June 19, 1865 announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. This holiday is sometimes also known as Freedom Day or Black Independence Day! Regionally, it has been celebrated for many generations. In 2021 it became a federal holiday. The center will be closed on Monday, 6/20 in honor of Juneteenth. We hope you will take a moment this weekend to reflect and celebrate this important anniversary.

PLEASE NOTE: Southwest Senior Center is closed Wednesday, May 18 & Thursday, May 19 because water to the building is turned off due to construction on the block. Sorry for the inconvenience! The center will re-open on Friday, May 20.

Today, we celebrated the 100th birthday of Bette Hatcher, our oldest living center member. Due to Covid restrictions, there was a small but lively gathering, and everyone went home with a slice of birthday cake. Bette is wearing 100 well! It was so nice to see her in person, as she has been participating remotely these past months. She has been a member of the center for 30 years and is a former center advisory council president. Bette is known for her flair for fashion and always participates in center fashion shows. She said she couldn’t think of any place else she would rather be today. ❤️We send her all our love and wish her all the best!
