Jane's Walk Philadelphia

Jane's Walk Philadelphia Jane’s Walk is a global festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs

Jane's Walk is an international organization that encourages people to walk, not merely as recreation, but as an enjoyable, healthy way to carry out everyday tasks. We celebrate the legacy of urban activist Jane Jacobs, who promoted walkable neighborhoods. Janes Walk Weekend takes place on the first weekend of May.

Dear Jane’s Walkers of Philadelphia:

Once again, we’re postponing Jane’s Walk PHL. Globally, many Jane’s Walk city organizers are taking their festivals online this year. To me, this is no substitute for in-person walks. By this time next year, we hope that the community spread of COVID-19 is far behind us and we’ll walk together again.

At the heart of Jane’s Walk is a very DIY spirit, so don’t let the lack of an official Jane’s Walk festival in Philly get you down. You can always lead a Jane-inspired walk with another organization – like your neighborhood RCO or a local nonprofit. Let us know and we’ll be sure to promote your walk using our social media.

For now, keep caring for Philly and each other.
Yours, Ashley Hahn, City Organizer

It's Jane's Walk weekend once again, and sadly we've postponed in-person walks again this year. BUT, in the spirit of Jane's Walk, we're collecting postcards from Philadelphians about their corner of the city.

So, drop us a line to tell us about somewhere special! Maybe there's a public space that was a pandemic salve, a neighborhood story you remember, an overlooked place you think more people should know about, or just a view that renews.

You're invited to submit a postcard here: https://tinyurl.com/spunyrmv All are welcome, have fun, keep it clean. It's the Jane's Walk way.

You can browse the growing map of postcards here: https://tinyurl.com/4pcxwzpy

We hope to pound the pavement with you very soon.

Historian and walk leader Ken Finkel celebrated Jane Jacobs' birthday this week on Philly History with a vignette on a revelation she had about urban renewal touring Philadelphia with Edmund Bacon. Read on >>

“We viewed the acres of rubble that one day will be apartment house towers and new houses. ‘You see, the planners always want to make a big deal of everything they do,’ Mrs. Jacobs said. ‘In urban renewal you need new buildings—I have no quarrel with that—but there were plenty of good buildings here. Why tear them all down?'”

We're sad not to be walking with you May 1-3, but until we can our walk leaders are coming through with ways to walk Philly in the spirit of Jane's Walk. Robert Seeley of Walk Germantown is putting together walks you can do, on your own time while maintaining safe physical distancing. First up: the beautiful Tulpehocken Station Historic District. Let us know if you go! Share photos on social media using so we can see what you see.

After conferring with walk organizers in other cities, and in complete deference to the confusion and gravity of this moment, it's time to confirm the inevitable: Jane's Walk is not going to happen May 1-3 as planned.

We are looking for other ways we might safely celebrate public life, our city’s incredible neighborhoods, and the dialogue that Jane’s Walks make possible – without hitting the streets together – the weekend of May 1-3 and beyond.

If you want to create an experience – a virtual walk? a neighborhood treasure hunt or bingo game that can be done alone? – or if you have some other idea for a Jane’s Walk experience appropriate for these strange, socially distant days, please be in touch.

We look forward to a time when we can walk together again. For now, let’s try to find ways we can come together, apart.
