PPH's Medical Mission Sisters and Associates community gathered during the week of Aug. 16 for its annual retreat. This year's theme was "Women and the Word: A Retreat with the Women in John's Gospel."

Morning sessions were held virtually, while members of the PPH MMS community came together in the Learning Center for afternoon discussions and reflection. Later in the week, some Sisters and Associates, along with a few neighbors, also enjoyed a special dinner in PPH's Private Dining Room.

The retreat brought together many of the 14 Medical Mission Sisters and Associates who call PPH home, offering time for prayer, fellowship and spiritual renewal.

Our residents LOVE Ocean City, NJ! The group enjoyed a beautiful, sunny day down the shore on Tuesday. ☀️😎🏖️

The trip to the shore is one of many excursions our Independent Living residents take through PPH transportation services. Whether it's local trips to retail stores or restaurants in Northeast Philly, or a further destination into the city, the suburbs or even New Jersey, our residents enjoy being out and about and the company of one another!

Today, we celebrate National Senior Citizens Day — honoring the wisdom, achievements and lifelong contributions of older adults.

At PPH, our “12 Steps to Mindful Aging Wisdom Circle” meets monthly. Inspired by 12 Steps to Mindful Aging, co-authored by PPH resident Marge Sexton, the group explores life’s later chapters through shared stories, wisdom and compassion.

In August, the group discussed Chapter 4: “Honor the complexities of your past experiences, forgive yourself, then others.” Participants reflected on giving themselves grace for situations they may have handled differently in hindsight and extending forgiveness to others.

We’re grateful for the wisdom and perspective our residents share with our PPH community. Conversations like these among senior citizens remind us that growing older is not just about looking back, but using life lessons to embrace the present and move forward with compassion. 💜

In September, the group will continue with Chapter 5: “Share These Complexities with a Trusted Companion,” building on the themes of Chapter 4.

📅 The group meets the first Monday of each month at 11:30 AM — except for the next meeting, which will be Tuesday, Sept. 8.

“We’ll all meet someone in our lives who wants to hear our exact story, so we don’t feel alone.”

That was one of the messages shared when Dr. Renee Exelbert visited PPH to present two of her TED Talks to our residents.

Drawing from her own experiences with breast cancer and family challenges, Dr. Exelbert spoke about how to navigate life’s challenges, find meaning in difficult experiences and move forward with resilience.

During the Q&A, our residents had the opportunity to ask questions, share their own experiences, and connect with Dr. Exelbert’s message in ways that reflected their own lives.

A special thank you to Dr. Exelbert for spending time with our community, and to Maureen Solomon and Vincent Barrett of our Wellness & Aquatics Team for organizing this presentation and conversation.
