From our Friends at PA AAP - Please, share this information far and wide.
Su***de can have a long-lasting effect on individuals such as family, friends, and communities. Children and adolescents may have a difficult time with their emotions that are strong as depression and anxiety. Overwhelming feelings can make them confused and worried, unsure of what's going on. Being available to talk or offer help can fix the confusion and help understand what the feeling is. Mental health in children and adolescents can affect them on their school work, hobbies, and future ways of understanding their feelings.
Being there for your child is the first step, listen when they are struggling or needing help. When a child is showing signs of suicidal thoughts or their mental health is deteriorating, it is important to bring them to their doctor. This can help prevent su***de or thoughts of su***de by giving them the help they need. Talking to a teacher or school counselor on the best ways to help them can give children another support system.
This is a crucial time to be there for children and adolescents as it shows that there is support in the world. Be aware of those around you even if they don't show signs of declining mental health or suicidal thoughts or feelings.
Be aware, listen, advocate, reach out, and support those who are struggling. We are here to support children in this time of need.
