Join us at The Welcoming Center for the launch of our new series, In Common, conversations with leading voices exploring immigration, history, and policy. For our first event, we’ll welcome scholar and author Yoosun Park for a timely discussion inspired by her forthcoming book Social Work, the Americanization Movement, and the Construction of Americans, 1874–1930.

Through the history of the Americanization movement, Yoosun Park will explore how ideas of race, belonging, and immigration have shaped the United States and why those conversations still matter today. Link in bio for tickets! ⬆️

Philadelphia runs on sports. On May 27, as part of PHL250, we’re bringing that energy to The Welcoming Center with Moro Ojomo! A Defensive Tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles, proud Nigerian immigrant, and of course, a Super Bowl champion, Moro brings incredible talent and heart to a game that is embedded in our city’s culture, while reminding us that it’s bigger than any one place. Still thinking about this incredible Solas moment! A group of 5th graders took the stage and challenged us all.

“We are taking a stand. We hear the untrue words said about immigrants, and we want a change for our world. We want to model how everyone should be treated, especially those who are new to our country. If a group of middle school kids understands the important roles immigrants play in our community—if we can come together to welcome others—then why can’t the leaders of our country do the same?”

At Solas, we were proud to honor Jimmy Williams, General President of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, and Lurline McKenzie, a TWC participant and apprentice at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard. Together, their stories reflect the power of union partnerships and the importance of building workforces that welcome immigrants.

As Jimmy shared, “Whether we are raising standards for undocumented workers, workers with work authorization, or workers who were born here, we raise standards for every worker.” Thank you to our incredible honorees for showing what it means to create opportunity, dignity, and belonging for all.

What a night at Solas 2026! Thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate the strength and contributions of immigrant communities across our region. The words from our honorees and speakers were powerful, reminding us what is possible when we come together. Thanks to all of you, we raised $647,000 to fuel this work. We are so grateful to be in this community with you and excited for our future! Keep an eye out for more photos to come!

Congrats, grads! 🎓

Last week, we celebrated another GSUPP graduation! This groundbreaking program, the first of its kind at TWC, equips participants with the technical training, industry knowledge, and hands-on preparation needed to pursue careers at

We’re proud to share that six participants made it through every round and were hired. With such a competitive selection process, this is an incredible achievement, and we’re thrilled to see our participants succeed.

We are so proud to announce Lurline McKenzie, a participant of The Welcoming Center from Jamaica and part of our GSUPP program, as this year’s Anne O’Callaghan Award Honoree at Solas 2026! ✨

Named after our founder, this award recognizes the unwavering commitment and strength of TWC participants. In every session, Lurline led with generosity, always the first to support her classmates, and approached each new challenge with curiosity, positivity, and a sense of humor. Her calm confidence and fearless spirit made a lasting impression. As her instructor Rachel Aistrop shared, “it was a pleasure to witness her success.”

A milestone for The Welcoming Center 💙

Last week, we launched our first program in Kennett Square in partnership with the Kennett Library. It is easy to have a vision. It is much harder to bring it to life. This happened because of the dedication and collaboration of many people who believe in expanding access and opportunity.

Last week, we kicked off our 2026 Breaking Bread, Breaking Barriers dinner series in Oxford Circle! 🤗 Over 100 community leaders gathered to share a meal and meaningful conversations about food, culture, and citizenship 🌎🍽️
