AASHE is an association of colleges and universities that work to create a sustainable future. AASHE provides resources, professional development opportunities and a network of support to enable institutions of higher education to model and advance sustainability in everything they do, from governance to curriculum advancements. One way AASHE supports the advancement of sustainability at colleges

and universities is by convening experts and collecting, evaluating and disseminating information and tools to increase the understanding of sustainability and its relevance to higher education stakeholders. AASHE defines sustainability in an inclusive way, encompassing human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods and a better world for all generations

Applications are now open for the 2027 Campus Energy Transition Academy!

Beginning in February 2027, join AASHE and partners for a six-month, cohort-based program designed to help your campus navigate complex energy decisions and build a more reliable, efficient, resilient, and financially sustainable energy future.

Through practical tools, expert guidance, real-world case studies, and peer collaboration, participants will gain the knowledge and strategies to assess opportunities, make the business case, build campus alignment, and move from planning to implementation.

Bring your campus team! Special group registration rates and a limited number of scholarships are available. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply by January 29, 2027.

What does the latest data tell us about sustainability staffing in higher education? The picture is more nuanced than you might expect.

37% of respondents reported an increase in paid sustainability staff positions since 2023, while only 16% reported a decrease.

The number of respondents serving in Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) or similar leadership roles also doubled, reflecting the growing strategic importance of sustainability at colleges and universities.

At the same time, the report highlights the challenges sustainability professionals continue to navigate, making these signs of growth even more meaningful.

🎤 We’re excited to announce our final keynote speaker for the AASHE 2026 Conference & Expo: Dr. Dana R. Fisher!

Dr. Fisher will deliver the closing keynote on Tuesday, October 6, bringing her expertise on democracy, civic engagement, activism, and climate politics to the AASHE community. An author, sociologist, and professor at American University, Dr. Fisher has spent her career examining how people and institutions respond to social and environmental challenges, and what it takes to turn concern into collective action.

Her latest book, “Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action,” explores the connections between climate disruption, activism, and meaningful societal change. She is also the host of the “Apocalyptic Optimist Podcast” and delivered a 2024 TED Talk on what it means to be an “apocalyptic optimist.”

What does it take to scale sustainability across research laboratories? 🔬🌱

Join us on August 26 to learn from the University of Virginia’s Sustainable Labs Program, which has engaged 214 labs, achieved Green Labs Certification in 72 of them, and avoided more than $5 million in utility costs across five buildings since 2018.

Fiona Hogan Bradford, Sustainable Labs Program Manager at UVA, will share how the program brings together researcher engagement through Green Labs with building-level efficiency efforts through Smart Labs and retrocommissioning. The webinar will explore the collaboration, funding model, and relationship-building that have helped the program grow, and offer lessons that other institutions can apply to their own sustainability work.

Meet Our Second Keynote Speaker: Dr. Sacoby Wilson 🌎

We’re excited to announce Dr. Sacoby Wilson as the second keynote speaker for the AASHE 2026 Conference & Expo, taking place Oct. 4-6 in Baltimore!

Dr. Wilson is an environmental justice scholar, researcher, and advocate whose work focuses on environmental health, environmental justice, climate change, sustainability, and community resilience. As a professor at the University of Maryland and director of the Health, Environmental and Economic Justice (T.H.E. EJ) Lab, he works closely with community-based organizations to address environmental health and justice challenges and translate research into action.

With more than 25 years of experience advancing environmental justice science, advocacy, and policy, Dr. Wilson brings a powerful perspective on the connections between sustainability, health, equity, and community.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Dr. Wilson to Baltimore and continuing the conversation about how higher education can help build a more just and sustainable future.
