SquashSmarts

SquashSmarts SquashSmarts is a free intensive out-of-school time program changing the lives of Philadelphia’s public school students.

Founded in 2001, SquashSmarts is a free intensive out-of-school time program changing the lives of Philadelphia’s public school students. SquashSmarts is a 501c3 non-profit academic and athletic mentoring program with a proven track record of keeping kids in school, in shape, and on track for graduation. SquashSmarts works with 5th-12th grade students who are selected based on commitment, effort and attitude, not athletic or academic ability. Operating out of two facilities, the Lenfest Center (North Philadelphia) and Drexel’s Daskalakis Athletic Center (West Philadelphia), students attend practices three days each week focusing on SquashSmarts’ Five Pillars: (1) Academic Support, (2) Squash Instruction, (3) Fitness and Nutrition, (4) Personal Achievement, and (5) Leadership. Students also participate in competitive squash opportunities, community service projects, cultural outings, and special events. An eight-year commitment to each child ensures long-term success by providing a team, a family, a safety net and a sense of belonging. Strong one-on-one relationships with staff and volunteers are the key to fostering every child’s success and breaking the cycle of Philadelphia’s public school drop-out rate. Put simply, SquashSmarts is giving kids their best shot!

Summer break? Not for these SquashSmarts students! 💪☀️

RJ, Luciano, Selah, Shaiyelis, and Kamil spent the week at Mercersburg Academy Squash Camp, sharpening their technique, building their tactical game, and developing the physical and mental skills that help them compete with confidence.

Of course, it wasn't all hard work; they had a great time, too! They even wrapped up the week by catching up with SquashSmarts alum and recent Mercersburg graduate, Dior. We love seeing our students connect with alumni who are already showing them what's possible.

Way to keep putting in the work this summer. We're proud of you all! 💙🥇

Happy Fourth of July from SquashSmarts! 🇺🇸

Today, we’re celebrating the spirit of independence, opportunity, and community that makes our city—and our country—strong.

A special thanks to our favorite “Benjamin Franklin” for bringing history (and plenty of smiles!) to BestShotBall this spring. ❤️🤍💙

As we celebrate with family and friends, we’re grateful for everyone who helps open doors for Philadelphia students through education, mentorship, and the game of squash.

Wishing you a safe and happy Independence Day!

Some people leave a mark on a place. Others leave a mark on people.

For nearly 20 years, Jeanie Shanahan has been a steady source of encouragement, kindness, and care for generations of SquashSmarts students. If these photos have one thing in common, it's that they capture what Jeanie has done so naturally through the years: meeting every student with a warm hug, a listening ear, and an unwavering belief in who they could become.

Today is Jeanie's last day at SquashSmarts, and while we'll miss seeing her in the halls, the love she's poured into this community will continue to ripple through the lives of our students and alumni.

Thank you, Jeanie, for everything. You'll always be part of the SquashSmarts family. 💙

Shout-out to our parents, who are some of the very best supporters.

Whether they're driving hours to a tournament, cheering from the sidelines, bringing food for events, helping with setup, or encouraging their students through tough losses, our SquashSmarts families make this community stronger.

To all of our incredible parents: thank you for showing up, believing in your children, and being part of the SquashSmarts family. ❤️

The Class of 2027 is starting senior year strong. 💪

Thanks to partners from Church & Dwight Co., our rising seniors kicked off the summer at Launch Lab with two days of college and career preparation at the Specter Center. Through college research, writing workshops, goal setting, and peer discussions, they're building the skills, confidence, and plans they'll carry into senior year and beyond. 🎓✨
