Seven years ago, our friend Trevor Budny invited Julia and I to join him for a 24-hour stair climb during his remission. Trevor was someone who, when he found something special, wanted to share it with everyone he loved. Legacy of Hope was one of those things. He instantly recognized how important their mission is to our community, and he invited us to be there. We’ve been on the stairs every year since, in his memory.

Some athletes climb to test their limits.

Stephanie climbs to change someone else's story.This year marks Steph's 8th PHL24, and if you've ever met her, you know she's not the loudest person in the crowd. She's quiet, determined, and shows up year after year because she knows every step can make a difference.

Today, that difference looks like a mom we'll call Tricia.

Tricia is a single mother of four living with Stage IV breast cancer. Unable to work during treatment, she relies on disability income that barely covers her rent, leaving little for groceries or other basic necessities. While applications for assistance are making their way through the system, the process can take weeks—or even months.

Her family needs food now.

That's where Legacy of Hope steps in.

Because of athletes like Stephanie and everyone who supports PHL24, we can deliver fresh, healthy groceries directly to families facing cancer—often within 24 hours of receiving a referral. It's one less burden for parents who are already carrying more than enough.

My name is Ken Rathgeb and on September 12 I will be climbing the steps of the Art Museum for 24 hours to raise money to help support and supply local cancer patients with the resources they need while going through cancer treatments.

Being the father of 5, it is really heartbreaking to know that there are families in our area that our struggling to feed their families and meet the needs of their children because one of the parents is going through cancer treatments and they have exhausted all their benefits. Please help me raise money so these family can get the help they desperately need.

On Monday, Legacy of Hope received an urgent referral for a cancer patient who hadn't had a full meal in several days.

She's waiting for her food assistance benefits to be approved , a process that can take weeks. A friend had planned to bring her groceries over the weekend, but those plans fell through. Already weakened by cancer treatment, waiting another day for food meant going hungry.

That's when Joe and Dan from Univest Financial stepped in. With the support of their company, they picked up her grocery order Brown's Market ShopRite and brought it right to her home, turning an urgent need into food for 2 weeks, and one less thing to worry about 💛

Less than 36 hours after receiving the referral, fresh groceries were delivered to her door.

When someone is fighting cancer, food can't wait. Thanks to volunteers and community partners like Univest, neither do we.

🌟 LOCAL ATHLETE - LOCAL IMPACT 🌟

When 51-year-old Shawna started chemotherapy for breast cancer, she was focused on one thing: caring for her 6-year-old granddaughter. Then her refrigerator stopped working.

Unable to work because of treatment, she couldn't afford a replacement and was relying on a cooler and ice to keep food cold.

Within 48 hours of receiving the referral, Legacy of Hope delivered a new refrigerator to Shawna's home. Sometimes hope looks like a refrigerator—giving families one less thing to worry about so they can focus on healing 💛

That's why Bryce Lexow is climbing the Art Museum steps for 24 hours during Brown's Super Stores PHL24.

Bryce doesn't stop. He recently ran a 100-mile ultramarathon and this fall he will start medical school Thomas Jefferson University. He is taking on the Art Museum steps to raise funds for patients like Shawna because he understands that caring for patients extends far beyond medical treatment.

Every step Bryce climbs helps ensure cancer patients receive the practical support they need, exactly when they need it.

For the past seven years, Julia Buonaguria has been a PHL24 athlete because she believes every step can bring hope to a family facing cancer.

An accomplished runner, Julia has raced in 32 states and is working toward running in all 50. Yet every September, she sets her sights on PH24, a challenge that has become an incredibly meaningful annual tradition.

As a proud member of Trevor, Julia climbs to honor the memory of dear friend, Trevor Budny, while helping local families facing cancer receive the support they need when life becomes overwhelming.

For patients like Lawrence, those 24 hours can change everything.

Lawrence spent decades working in Philadelphia's transportation industry, saving for a retirement he hoped would be filled with travel and time with family. Instead, shortly after retiring, he was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, an aggressive blood cancer. Treatment quickly drained his savings. Now, instead of planning vacations, he's forced to choose between medicine or rent, food or electricity.

Because Julia keeps climbing—and because people like you keep giving—Lawrence received practical support when he needed it most, allowing him to focus on treatment instead of impossible financial choices.

Chris Clayton refuses to quit.

Behind every step Chris takes is a person like Ricardo.

Ricardo is a 42-year-old father from Torresdale battling stomach cancer. As the sole provider for his son, chemotherapy has forced him to stop working. He jokes that he isn't afraid to die, he's just tired of being bald. Behind the humor is an exhausting reality: he's now undergoing his sixth round of chemotherapy.

Every step I climb at PHL24 is for the families whose lives have been forever changed by cancer.

I climb in honor of loved ones, friends, and every person who has faced this disease with courage. I also climb because no patient or family should have to choose between paying for basic needs and focusing on treatment.

Legacy of Hope reminds us that healing is about more than medicine—it’s about community. It’s about neighbors helping neighbors, showing up for one another, and making sure no one has to face cancer alone.

This September 12th & 13th, for the 6th year in a row, I am honored to take on the challenge of climbing the iconic Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art for 24 hours.

As one of Legacy of Hope’s sponsored 24-hour athletes, I will participate in the 9th Annual endurance event — 24 hours dedicated to raising awareness and urgently needed funds for patients and families battling cancer.

Every step is dedicated to ensuring no one in Philadelphia or Camden facing cancer has to worry about putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their heads.

This year, in partnership with Browns Super Stores, our goal is $250,000. Ambitious? Absolutely. Here’s what it will do:

▪️Provide immediate relief for families facing housing or food insecurity during treatment
▪️Enable continued progress on the David N. April Emergency Patient Support Center — a cornerstone of hope for cancer patients and families in Camden and Philadelphia ▪️Ensure no family faces cancer alone

This is about more than endurance. It’s about standing up for those who need it most — with compassion, determination, and hope.

I climb in honor and memory of my dad, Peter C. McVeigh, who lived every day of his life in service to others. I climb to ensure no cancer patient or their family goes through this battle alone. I climb for those who cannot.
