We received an email from the Philadelphia Airport Director of Community Outreach about instances of a laser being pointed at nighttime aircraft. This is a very serious concern and a safety issue for both those in the aircraft and our neighborhood. Below is a copy of the email. If you have any questions or concerns, we can put you in touch with someone at the airport.

I’m reaching out to share an important safety advisory about a serious matter that affects both the West Torresdale/Morrell Park neighborhood and the aviation community above us. Recently, there have been incidents involving handheld lasers being pointed at aircraft during nighttime flights, and such actions pose significant risks to aviation safety and the community at large.

Pointing a laser at an aircraft might seem like a harmless act, but it can temporarily blind or disorient a pilot. Even a brief flash of light can interfere with a pilot’s ability to safely fly, particularly during takeoff and landing. This puts passengers, crew members, and people on the ground — particularly those in/near West Torresdale and Morrell Park — at risk.

It’s also essential to know that intentionally shining a laser at an aircraft is a federal offense. Anyone caught doing so can face significant fines and potential criminal charges. The consequences are severe and reflect the profound danger such actions create for passengers, crew members, and people on the ground. What may seem like a quick moment of curiosity can lead to very serious legal consequences.

We respectfully ask all residents in West Torresdale and Morrell Park to refrain from using lasers outdoors at night that could reach the flight paths above the community. Should anyone observe someone pointing a laser toward the sky in a way that seems unsafe, please report it to the proper authorities.

Thank you for helping keep neighborhoods and the people who fly over it safe.
