Stadium Stompers

Stadium Stompers We are a movement of North Philly community members, students, and workers coming together to stop Te Temple University has a crisis of priorities.

Temple University has proposed a plan for a $126 million football stadium in the heart of historic North Philadelphia. Temple has repeatedly shown disrespect towards the local Black community, pushing people out of their homes and using the Temple police force to intimidate community members. In the poorest major city in the country, in a city with a poverty rate of 30%, a new football stadium is

irresponsible and disrespectful. It would displace long-term residents, raise tuition for students, and create disruptive noise, lights, and trash. It should be a democratic community institution that provides living wage jobs, affordable education, and services to working class Philadelphians, but instead the university is controlled by large corporations whose sole interests are making profits. We say NO to the stadium and NO to gentrification! We say YES to student, community, and worker power!

Great news from Carmela Hernandez and her children:

On March 17th - "Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Hernandez and her four children walked out of the Germantown Mennonite Church, officially concluding three years and three months in sanctuary — longer than anyone in Philadelphia during the last five years."..

“'Freedom is never free,' the Rev. Renee McKenzie told the crowd. 'Sometimes you just have to grasp it and take it because it’s yours, and you’re not going to let anyone take it from you.'
It was McKenzie who, at the start, on a moment’s notice, welcomed a desperate Hernandez family into the Church of the Advocate in North Philadelphia."

The move inside, first to one church, then to another, shielded Hernandez and her four children from deportation.

Tell City Council it’s time to END the 10 Year Tax Abatement! This tax break for developers continues to starve out our schools and price out long term residents. Tomorrow the Committee of the Whole will vote on Bill No. 200366. Councilmember Henon wants to delay the reductions we won to the residential tax abatement for one year. We are in the midst of an economic crisis and EVERY Philadelphian should be paying their fair share.

REGISTER TO SPEAK by 3pm TODAY! Call 215-821-6625 or email [email protected] with the full name of the testifier, a callback phone number, the resolution number that is being testified about, and whether the testimony is in favor of or against the bill.

Gentrification and policing are inextricably linked!

"When the layers are peeled back, the origin of Breonna’s home being raided by police starts with a political need to clear out a street for a large real estate development project and finishes with a newly formed, rogue police unit violating all levels of policy, protocol and policing standards.”

The complaint claims Breonna Taylor was wrapped up in a case that was less about a drug house and more about speeding up the city's development.

"The Philadelphia Historic Commission denied plans for a new police station in North Philadelphia on Friday, as activists in the city and across the country call for cuts to police funding while decrying police brutality following the killing of George Floyd.

In written and oral comments before and during the commission’s meeting Friday, about 130 people voiced their opposition to the proposed $20 million new home of the 22nd police district in the primarily black community."

Activists in the city and across the country are calling for cuts to police funding while decrying police brutality following the killing of George Floyd.

"Meanwhile, Kenney’s initial budget recommended increasing the department’s construction spending by $11 million to $62 million. A good chunk of that money will be used to build a new home for the 22nd District, which covers a vast band of North Philadelphia between 10th and 33rd Streets.

The two-story building will cost at least $20 million. It will be located in the West Diamond Street corridor, at the western end of North Philadelphia’s most significant historic district."

A $20 million building project raises questions about Mayor Kenney’s spending priorities.
