Achieve Now

Achieve Now We are a social justice organization that sees literacy as a mechanism to effect social change. Better readers have brighter futures!

Volunteer to help a K-2 student become a better reader this year! https://forms.office.com/r/uBZBQ9CyQ8 Achieve Now is a Philadelphia-based social justice organization that sees literacy as a mechanism to effect social change. Our mission is to provide K-2 schoolchildren in Greater Philadelphia with high-quality, culturally competent literacy instruction. Our vision is to produce strong, confident

, effective, and joyful readers who see reading as an integral part of their lives and are life-long learners. Our pie-in-the-sky goal is to ensure that every K-2 student receives three years of robust support in order that they can ably navigate the all-important transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”

Achieve Now moves Philadelphia schoolchildren to grade-level reading in an accelerated time frame by recruiting and training adult volunteers to coach first-and second graders one-on-one and by offering direct small group instruction to kindergarten and first grade students. We affirm student identities, using values-driven and asset-based language. We approach our students with high expectations and celebrate the many and varied skills students possess. At Achieve Now, we see literacy as a social justice issue. We are committed to creating fair and equitable learning environments for all students, regardless of their background or circumstances. Our work aims to address systemic barriers and ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential. We strive to help children unlock stories that reflect their lived experience and open them up to a diverse array of alternative experiences. We believe that diversity and inclusion are catalysts for meaningful change and recognize that building a more inclusive and equitable world starts at home, in our own organization. We foster an inclusive workplace where everyone feels respected, heard, valued, and supported. This positions us to promote inclusive practices, addressing disparities, and fostering empathy and understanding among students.

We don’t guess what works — we use what’s proven to work.

A research team reviewed years of studies on early literacy and identified five high-impact strategies that truly move the needle. Our program focuses on the top three- high-quality structured tutoring, involving families in the process, and training adults to teach specific reading skills.

🧠 Meet our new Brain Emoji!

This year, coaches can use it to remind students:
✨ “It’s okay if it feels hard.”
✨ “Mistakes help me learn.”

📚🧩Our monster friends are back and gearing up for a new school year! They’ve been busy putting together fun brain breaks to keep our students learning, laughing, and moving.

This week, Slink made an I Spy game using a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat and we can’t wait to see our students try it out! 🔎🎨

Achieving Now in Philadelphia!

Achieve Now's mission is to bring all children to grade-level reading. Our vision is a simple one: that all students gain the basic skills necessary to succeed in school and life.

In 2016, 39.1% of School District of Philadelphia 3rd graders scored below proficiency on the PSSA literacy sections. Once students get behind, it's almost impossible to catch up; as a result, one in four Philly public school students drops out after years of low performance related to lack of literacy skills. The statistics are most dire for low-income, students of color, whose rates of achievement, graduation, and post-secondary completion are far lower than those of their peers. The achievement gap is real. Many of the middle-school students we assess are under-performing as many as four or five grade levels below their appropriate reading level. But we see it as early as kindergarten, where high numbers of children are already a year or more behind their peers. Achieve Now is dedicated to transforming the educational system in Philadelphia to one that produces students who can read. We will do this by incorporating evidence-based literacy instruction into Philadelphia schools, resulting in dramatic improvements in grade level reading.
