This summer, six college interns joined the Pennsylvania Prison Society:

Hannah from Ursinus College
Khiari from Temple University
Maya from Bryn Mawr College
Michelle from Swarthmore College
Nikki from Duke University

They read and responded to letters from people in prison, attended Hope Alive meetings, supported programs inside facilities, worked with data and communications, and learned from staff across the organization.

Family Support Groups 🫂💙
Our facilitated Family Support Groups meet online every other Tuesday at 6:00 PM — it's a safe space to connect, share experiences, and navigate the challenges of having an incarcerated loved one.

We love hearing how our work helps 💙

Every day, we receive letters from people who are incarcerated asking for help with medical care, facility conditions, and other challenges they're facing.

We also receive letters of thanks.

We can't always solve every problem, but we show up, we listen, and we advocate. Sometimes, that alone is meaningful enough for someone to put pen to paper and let us know.

This letter is a reminder that dignity, empathy, compassion and commitment matter.

A new report from the Pennsylvania Prison Society on conditions at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility (CFCF) — Philadelphia's largest jail — finds both meaningful improvements and continued concerns affecting the health, safety, and dignity of people in custody.

Regular prison monitoring walkthroughs allows us to track conditions over time, elevate the experiences of incarcerated people to jail leadership and the public, and promote accountability through independent oversight.

We're grateful to the Philadelphia-area volunteers who participated, to State Rep. Rick Krajewski for joining, and to the many volunteers who show up each week to support people incarcerated in Philadelphia-area jails.

Congratulations to the Committee of Seventy of a thoughtful and very memorable Promise of Democracy Summit!

We were grateful to attend and especially appreciated keynote speaker and historian Jon Meacham's reflection on what sustains democracy: human dignity and empathy.

Those ideas resonate deeply with our work.

They aren't just democratic ideals—they're also at the heart of the Pennsylvania Prison Society's mission. They are also why we work in partnership with organizations like Seventy to ensure eligible people who are incarcerated understand and can exercise their right to vote.
