This week's eruv message is on honor of the Jews of Harvard. On the 21st of Sivan in 1765, Harvard created an endowed professorship of Hebrew and Oriental languages. The current professor is the first Jewish one in its history. Fun American Fact - the money for this professorship was originally from the uncle of John Hancock of Declaration of Independence fame.

Shabbas Naso
May 29-30, 2026
14 Sivan 5786
This week's eruv message is on honor of holy Jewish texts. On this date in 1510, an edict to destroy Jewish books in Cologne and Frankfurt am Main was rescinded.

After an enormous amount of work and coordination, we are happy to report that the Eruv is up for Shabbat!

A huge thank you to Rabbi Gore, who oversees Eruv repairs and maintenance and was out working until midnight on Thursday night to make the necessary repairs. Thank you as well to Rabbanit Fruchter, who helped connect us with the right people so access could be granted to the affected areas and the needed work could be completed.

Please use this opportunity to support the Eruv. We truly need the support of the community in order to maintain and improve an Eruv that serves everyone. You can donate here.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Eliezer Hirsch
Director, Center City Eruv

###-The Eruv is Currently DOWN - ###

Eruv Update

Due to major construction and the installation of new utility poles around Sedgley Drive and Poplar Drive/Street, the Center City Eruv may unfortunately be down this week while significant rerouting work is completed. We are working hard to try to have everything repaired and operational in time for Shabbat, but at this point we cannot guarantee that we will be able to complete the work in time, especially because FIFA World Cup preparations in Philadelphia are causing street closures and limiting access to some of the affected areas.

We will continue to keep the community updated as we know more.

We also wanted to use this opportunity to share a broader update about the major Eruv upgrades currently underway. These upgrades include important halachic, durability, and reliability improvements designed to strengthen the long-term integrity and maintainability of the Eruv.

As part of this effort, rabbis from the community are being updated and involved in the ongoing oversight of the Eruv to help ensure broad communal confidence and strong halachic standards. This is also part of a broader effort to establish a more formal and sustainable long-term structure for the Eruv.

At the same time, the Eruv continues to require substantial ongoing maintenance and routine repairs simply to remain operational and maintained at its intended standard. We are trying to be as frugal and responsible as possible, but these projects and repairs are expensive and there is currently not enough financial support to sustain all of this work long term.

We strongly encourage everyone who benefits from the Eruv to participate in supporting it. Even relatively modest recurring donations, such as $18 per month per family, would make a major difference in helping sustain and improve the Eruv going forward.

We also want to thank all of the dedicated Eruv checkers who volunteer their time each week to help maintain the Eruv. If you would consider being trained as a checker, please contact Rabbi Hirsch.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the Eruv until now. Our Eruv serves a very large area and requires constant maintenance, oversight, and improvement. We deeply appreciate the community’s continued support and patience during this process.
