He was so overwhelmed meeting with former teammates of his father that he made a solemn promise to the memory of his dad to pursue equality for these fine gentlemen.

In 1950, DeZonie became just the fifth Black player in NBA history when he joined the Tri-Cities Blackhawks (now the Atlanta Hawks). This was the same season that Earl Lloyd, Chuck Cooper, and Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton broke the NBA’s color barrier. However, DeZonie’s time in the league was brief—he played only five games before leaving, reportedly due to racial tensions and dissatisfaction with how Black players were treated.
