Thank you, veterans. We enjoy working with you and hope our small contributions help to make your burdens a little more bearable.

"I'm not really sure how it works, I just know that to be around nature is very good for, for the soul," Wichmann said.

Occupational therapist Barb Kreske said nature's mysterious ability to heal is firmly rooted in science.

"What is pretty solid now is evidence that spending time in nature decreases levels of stress. Hard measures, not just 'I feel better' but cortisol levels, heart rate, sweat. I don't care who you are, people respond to plants," Kreske said.

Some Chicago-are vets are benefiting from a unique program where tending to a plant also helps them tend to the lingering wounds of war

Thanks to everyone who braved inclement weather to make our Spring 2017 planting a success! Tree Tenders added two new trees to the neighborhood on Lombard (pictured) and Pine. Meanwhile, a third tree was previously planted in front of Old St. Mary's on 4th Street.

"Through TreePhilly's Yard Tree Program, Philadelphia residents can receive up to two FREE trees per address! Use this online form to pre-register for your trees and choose which pick up event you can attend. At each pickup event there will be experts present to help you choose which type of tree is best for your location, and to teach you how to plant and care for your new trees so you can take them home and plant them yourself. This program is for private yard trees only (front, back and side yards). If you are interested in a street tree for the sidewalk outside of your property, please visit www.treephilly.org for more information."

I think transplanting the tree early on and possibly treating it rather than cutting it down and "replacing the original branches with plastic replicas" would've been preferable, but either way the fate of this pine reflects just how much trees can mean to us.

The tsunami-ravaged city of Rikuzentakata cut down the lone pine tree that survived the disaster 18 months ago and came to symbolize hope, but there are plans to keep the preserved tree on display. Crews began the delicate process of cutting the 270-year-old tree into...

Another example of why trees need our help.

In Cambridge, England, the two-century-old chestnut standing outside King's College chapel has become a beloved icon. The moth lays eggs in leaves and the larvae start devouring them, causing foliage to turn color as soon as July. The moth was soon joined by a bacterium that came from the Himalaya...

"Wood" is not alive. Only a thin layer of tissue beneath the bark transports the food made in the leaves. Strangulation is a slow but certain way to kill any tree.

When the weather gets hot trees need water--and nothing helps their roots soak up rain like a spacious tree pit. Construction crews are tearing up the sidewalks in Society Hill to install ADA-compliant wheel chair ramps at every curb. It's an improvement in theory--but shovels, concrete, and backhoes can really tear up roots! On Friday 6/29 it was 98° but that didn't stop outgoing President Hans and our newest Tree Tender, Mike, from getting their hands (and everything else) dirty in front of the Physick House at 4th and Cypress. Over four hours they removed 30 bricks, cleaned and laid 33 Belgian blocks, and added 14 bags (about 500 pounds) of soil to the pit.
