Shipboard Interpretation Coordinator, Jacob, and the rest of Independence Seaport Museum Workers United (AFSCME Local 397) have reasonable requests for their first contract: safer working conditions, safer levels of staffing, and fair and competitive pay (50% make less than $15/hr!)

On Philadelphia’s Academy of Natural Sciences: The rush by Drexel University and the Board to close the Academy of Natural Sciences’ museum on September 30 is a profound betrayal. Philadelphians have invested in the Academy for nearly two centuries through our labor, public funding, private donations, memberships, and tax exemptions, and cannot allow a small clique of Philly powerbrokers to toy with its fate like this. As the Presidents of AFSCME District Council 47, a council of local unions for Philadelphians working in the public and private sectors, and AFSCME Local 397, the largest local union of workers in Philly’s museums and other cultural organizations, we are heartbroken and angry for every worker, parent, scholar, student, and child affected by this callous decision. Like all the museums, libraries, zoos, and universities in this city, the Academy of Natural Sciences belongs first and foremost to the people who live and work here. Admin of University of Pennsylvania face charge of Unfair Labor Practices, violations of federal labor law, from unionized staff in Penn Libraries: We are the Penn Libraries librarians, curators, developers, archivists, and more who unionized in 2024. Two years later, after substantial progress toward agreement on a first contract, we are stuck fighting Penn for fair pay. Penn Admin is regressing instead of progressing. At our last negotiation session they withdrew money they had proprosed, prompting us to file a charge of Unfair Labor Practices with the federal National Labor Relations Board, who investigate and remedy any such illegal conduct. Now we learn Penn received $7 billion from the annual growth of its endowment, a 27% increase, the largest single-year return on record. FAIR PAY NOW The Penn Libraries

Weeks into the fall semester and months since their contract’s original expiration date, Penn workers are still working without a new contract and without the fair pay they deserve. Enough! It is time for Penn to get serious. Penn Dining union member Tracey says: “Every day, we go above and beyond despite short staffing, broken equipment, and a lack of the materials we need to do our jobs. We deserve better pay because of the dedication, hard work, and years we’ve devoted to Penn.” That’s right.
