Today, we remember the lives lost and honor the heroes who responded with courage and compassion on 9/11, a day that reminds us of the remarkable strength people can find in one another — especially in the most difficult moments, when strangers come together to help those in need.
The team at Gift of Life Donor Program team embodied that strength 25 years ago.
That morning, the team was coordinating several organ and tissue donations when tragedy struck and all civilian aircraft were grounded. As our nation grappled with the unimaginable events unfolding around us, we remained focused on honoring the generous decisions of donor families and giving those waiting for a transplant a chance at life.
Working with our air charter partner and the FAA, the team advocated for and secured special permission to fly transplant teams to northeastern Pennsylvania to recover organs from a donor. Because of their determination and perseverance, eight lives were saved.
At the same time, the team worked diligently to keep clinical operations moving, coordinating tissue and cornea donations and ensuring the wishes of donor families were honored.
9/11 demonstrated the spirit that remains at the heart of our work: dedication does not stop when circumstances become difficult. We come together, find a way forward, and remain committed to the families who entrust us with the legacy of their loved one.
