On this date in 1952, the SS United States embarked on her second set of builder’s sea trials. This photo, from the Conservancy’s B.J. Nixon collection depicts the ship setting out on this trial voyage.

It was on this second sea trial that the Big U reached a speed of 38 knots, an unprecedented speed record for an ocean liner.

Thousands of viewers have enjoyed learning the storied history of food and dining aboard the Big U, like the 9,000 individual
meals that could be served daily?

This feat was thanks to the many hardworking crew members -- all men -- as women were not permitted to work in the galleys.
