The Conservancy is thrilled to announce an incredible new acquisition to our curatorial collection – a stunning mid-century installation mural originally mounted in the Cabin Class Smoking room aboard the SS United States. This piece, comprised of four panels, was created by abstract artist Lewis York in glazed enamel paint on aluminum.

In keeping with the patriotic theme for shipboard artwork, the colorful mural depicts etched bottles and jugs adorned with patriotic renderings including depictions of George Washington, a bald eagle, and one early American bottle labeled “Liberty & Union.” Learn more here: https://www.ssusc.org/news/2026/07/yorkmural

Constance from Florida shared a sweet note to the Big U on one of the Conservancy’s historic reproduction postcards.

She wrote: “Dear SS United States,...My family sailed on several ocean liners during those years as we were living in Europe and would come home on leave on the SS United States…Nothing will ever beat the SS United States. I look forward to visiting the museum when it opens!

Mark Perry, Conservancy co-founder and ocean liner memorabilia enthusiast, is offering incredible original SS United States items at auction: authentic stateroom furnishings, brushed aluminum railings and signage, advertising posters, rare models, and more.

He is generously donating a portion of the proceeds to the Conservancy. Mark's contributions to the Conservancy are long-standing, he brought national attention to the Big U with his work on the documentary film "SS United States: Lady in Waiting” (2008). He is also currently at work on "Superliner: The Enduring Legacy of the SS United States," our forthcoming feature-length documentary about the Big U's legacy and recent history.

Earlier this year, Mark worked closely with the Conservancy to identify special items from his collection to donate to the Conservancy's future museum and visitor experience. These included the personal scrapbook and possessions of Commodore Harry Manning, who captained the SS United States on her triumphal maiden voyage. He also contributed original deck chairs and the captain's coffee table to display in our future museum and visitor experience, where we will reunite the thousands of remarkable items once aboard the SS United States for the first time in over 50 years.

We are always thrilled to hear stories from former passengers like Jo, who traveled aboard two United States Lines ships in the 1960s: "In addition to traveling to Europe on the SS United States, when my father was reassigned to the State, we then traveled on her sister ship, the SS America arriving in New York on my 16th birthday."

Did you travel on the SS United States or the SS America? We would love to hear from you!

Please email [email protected] to receive the survey and share your memories. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, they are an integral part of celebrating the SS United States’ legacy!

Mary, who traveled on the SS United States in 1967, shared vivid memories experience dining onboard:

"The dining room was so grand with all the big round tables covered in white linen tablecloths. Always a beautiful centerpiece and the ship's tableware. Lots of red velvet everywhere is what I remember too."

We have heard from so many former passengers and crew members about their dining experience on the Big U, and have an extensive collection of dining-related artifacts, from menus to table decorations to swizzle sticks among our collections.
