Jackie Parks, an ocean liner enthusiast and participant in our 2022 70th maiden voyage anniversary design contest shared her 1950’s style creation, which drew inspiration from mid-century advertisements. Along with her design, she shared “The SS United States was about peace and prosperity, and American power through trade. Most of all, she has a style you just can’t hate.”

We are once again seeking submissions to be featured on special t-shirts that will be sold this year! We invite ship enthusiasts, artists and graphic designers of all ages and ability levels to share designs celebrating the Big U during her namesake nation’s 250th anniversary year.

In 2022, the Conservancy marked the 70th anniversary of the SS United States’ maiden voyage with a special design contest. Canadian student Riley Bugg created the winning design, pictured here, which was featured on a limit-edition t-shirt.

Now, during the 250th anniversary of her namesake nation, ship enthusiasts, artists and graphic designers of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to submit a design that could be featured on special t-shirts that will be sold this year to support our work celebrating this inspiring symbol of the nation.

Susan from Memphis, TN answered our call for messages to the Big U, sharing this photo and note:

“Myself, husband and baby on the SS United States as we boarded to immigrate to America from Southampton to New York on June 8, 1965. We arrived on June 13th, 1965. I was 19, husband 21, baby 9 months. It was a terrible journey, very rough.I was fortunate to be able to go to Mobile last June to see her. What a journey it was. Unforgettable, to say the least.”

The Big U continues to inspire so many from around the world during this pivotal year of her namesake nation's 250th anniversary, and we’re pleased to announce that the Conservancy is launching a special t-shirt design contest to celebrate the SS United States.

Now through October 12, ship enthusiasts, artists and graphic designers of all ages and ability levels are encouraged to submit a design that could be featured on special t-shirts that will be sold this year to support our work celebrating this inspiring symbol of the nation.
