Early this morning, two Philadelphia police officers from the 19th District answered a call in West Philadelphia and were met with gunfire. Both are in critical condition, fighting for their lives. On behalf of the men and women of the Philadelphia Building Trades, our prayers are with these officers, their families, and every member of the Philadelphia Police Department.

This is the reality of the job. While the rest of us sleep, police officers answer calls without knowing what is waiting on the other side of the door. They run toward danger so our families don't have to.

They do it on our blocks, in our neighborhoods, for people they have never met. And every one of them has someone at home hoping they walk back through the door at the end of the shift.

Our members know something about hard, dangerous work, and we know what it means to look out for the person next to you. Police officers are working people. They are our neighbors, our family members, and our partners in building a safer Philadelphia. An attack on them is an attack on all of us.

We stand with Commissioner Bethel, Mayor Parker, and the entire department. We are grateful to the doctors and nurses at Penn Presbyterian. And we ask every Philadelphian to keep these two officers and their families in your prayers.

Strong unions build more than buildings — we build stronger communities.

This weekend, members of the Philadelphia Building Trades were back out in Northeast Philadelphia, rolling up their sleeves and helping clean up the neighborhoods where our members live, work, and raise their families.

From picking up trash and clearing debris to removing illegally dumped materials, our members showed what it means to take pride in our city and give back to the communities we call home.

A big thank you to State Representative Pat Gallagher for partnering with us on this effort, and to Brian Eddis of the Philadelphia Building Trades, Timothy Crowther, Dion Frasca and District Council 21, along with Bobby McFadden and Sheet Metal Workers Local 19, for their hard work and for helping make the day possible.

There’s always more work to be done, and the Philadelphia Building Trades will continue to show up.

Strong unions. Strong neighborhoods. Stronger Philadelphia. 💪🏗️

The Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council would like to recognize and thank Esteban Vera Jr., Business Manager of Laborers’ Local 57, and Matt Trzaska, Philadelphia Building Trades Council Trustee and International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) District Council 21 Director of Organizing, for their hard work, dedication, and collaboration surrounding SEPTA’s responsible contractor provisions.

This work represents an important step toward strengthening standards on SEPTA projects and creating greater opportunities for responsible contractors and the skilled men and women of the building trades.

Responsible contracting standards help promote fair wages and benefits, workforce training, strong safety practices, and a skilled and dependable workforce. They help ensure contractors compete on the quality of their work and their commitment to workers.

Efforts like these demonstrate what can be accomplished when our trades work together with a common purpose. Thank you to everyone who dedicated their time, knowledge, and leadership to moving this important work forward.

We look forward to continuing to advocate for strong labor standards, responsible contractors, and well-paid opportunities for the hardworking men and women of the Philadelphia Building Trades.

💙 Taking care of our members means taking care of the whole person — on and off the job.

Today’s Philadelphia Inquirer takes an important look at the mental health challenges facing workers in the construction industry and the resources available right here in Philadelphia.

We are especially proud to see Buddy Osborne, Chaplain for the Philadelphia Building & Construction Trades Council, highlighted for the support he provides to our members during some of the most difficult moments imaginable.

The article also highlights the incredible work of ATAP — the Allied Trades Assistance Program, which provides critical mental health and substance use resources to union members and their families.

Our tradespeople are known for their strength, but strength also means knowing when to ask for help — and knowing that someone is there when you do.

Thank you to Buddy, ATAP, and everyone working to break the stigma surrounding mental health in the construction industry and make sure our members know they are never alone. 💙🏗️
