Eleanor Armstrong is getting ready....you should be too!
Good morning!
I hope everyone can read this email after the eclipse yesterday!
Wanted to remind you that the "Team Elbo walk for MELANOMA Research" is just 2 months away, October 22nd.
Like last year, we will meet at The Lakes (FDR Park) at noon for a short walk around the lake.
FDR park is located at 20th and Pattison Avenue in South Philadelphia. If you have a Team Elbo T shirt, start looking for it now 😃 If you need a shirt, email your size to me and I will get you one.
All donations I receive, will go to The Wistar Institute Researchers, some of whom I met last year. Your donation can be in any amount and mailed to me at 1746 Stocker Street, Philadelphia 19145. Please make checks payable to "The Wistar Institute".
Hope to see you October 22nd! And if you can't do the walk, please come out anyway and get in the Team Elbo picture!
Peace,
Eleanor
P.S. If you know of someone who has passed away from Melanoma, please email their name to me so they can be remembered before we start our walk ❤️

Awesome. Thank you Wistar Institute!

On Thursday, June 22, please join The Wistar Women & Science Program at 6pm for a cocktail reception and engaging presentation by Dr. Maureen Murphy entitled, “Your DNA: What does it mean to have a genetic cancer mutation & how does that inform therapy.” During this program, you will:

· Join a network of women who share an interest in women’s health, science and biomedical research.
· Meet leading scientists and learn about emerging discoveries and biomedical advances that are improving the health and well-being of individuals worldwide.
· Learn what genetic mutations mean for known inherited cancer syndromes, like hereditary breast cancer, and how knowing that you have a cancer genetic mutation better informs your therapeutic course of action.

For more information or to purchase tickets please visit www.wistar.org/womenandscience or call (215) 898-3930.

Save the Date!!! Team Elbo Walk for Melanoma Research is Sunday October 22nd Noon. More details later. Thank you Eleanor Armstrong!

Wistar is hosting The Noreen O'Neill Melanoma Research Symposium, titled "Melanoma: Advances in Biology and Therapy." This is a free, full day scientific symposium that takes place on June 20 from 9 am - 4:30 pm.

The past decade has seen tremendous advances in the treatment of melanoma, but these successes are often short-lived due to the rapid onset of drug resistance. Expanding our understanding of melanoma biology will help decode the mechanisms of innate and acquired resistance and drive the development of novel and improved targeted therapies.

This symposium brings together leaders in melanoma research to discuss the most recent advances in the field and their potential translational applications. Learn more: https://wistar.org/melanomasymposium2017

We are proud to support the Symposium!

Here's more detail on the Team Elbo walk in October:
Hello Team Elbo Members,

October 2nd is fast approaching and I wanted to remind you about the Melanoma Walk on October 2nd for MELANOMA RESEARCH.

Do you know that each year there are more cases of skin cancer than the combined cancers of the breast, prostate, lung, and colon?
As a 3x MELANOMA survivor, I feel VERY LUCKY! My walk is not only for MELANOMA Research, but in memory of those who lost their battle with MELANOMA and Squamous cell, another deadly form of skin cancer.
You can meet me at the Lakes, aka FDR Park, 20th & Pattison at Noon on October 2nd for the Walk. There is no website this year so I'm asking you to mail your pledge in any amount to me at 1746 Stocker St., Phila., 19145. Make the check to "TEAM ELBO/ Wistar Institute" and include your T shirt size so I can have a TEAM ELBO shirt for you. If you cannot participate in the Walk, donations will be gladly accepted.
If you know of someone who has passed away from MELANOMA, please email or send me their name. I'm going to say the names at the beginning of the Walk in their rememberance.
After the Walk, if you can join me at the Philadium for a toast, that would be great. Any questions please call me at 215-779-0945.

Thanks for your past support and welcome to the new TEAM ELBO members! Hope to see you October 2nd.

Love,
Eleanor

Dear Friends,

We are writing to inform you that the Noreen O’Neill Foundation for Melanoma Research (NOFMR) closed on June 30, 2016. The work begun by the Noreen O’Neill Foundation for Melanoma Research will continue at The Wistar Institute as the Noreen O’Neill Melanoma Research Fund. We are sad to say goodbye, but are also proud of the work we did together with so many dedicated volunteers, researchers, doctors and administrators in the Philadelphia community and beyond for almost twenty years.

The foundation was founded in 1998 by Noreen O’Neill, with the help of melanoma scientist Dr. Meenhard Herlyn at The Wistar Institute. Together they created an organization to raise the profile of melanoma and with the belief that research can, and does, change lives for the better. NOFMR created a space where people in the community could discover the empowering benefits of bringing researchers and patients together.

NOFMR hosted workshops, seminars, travel awards for young scientists and the annual Running for Cover event. In addition, we:
• inaugurated the Society of the Melanoma Research
• instituted the Melanoma Research Conference
• were the beneficiary of Date with A Plate for over six years
• supported various research grants at The Wistar Institute Melanoma Research Center

As mentioned above, the Noreen O’Neill Melanoma Research Fund will be established with money from the foundation to advance transformative melanoma research being conducted at The Wistar Institute. To kick off the transition of the fund to Wistar, we are excited to be hosting a spin class fundraiser at SoulCycle in Ardmore on Sunday, July 24 at 2pm. Mark your calendars and please visit https://wistar.org/soulcycle2016 to register or contact Anita Pepper, VP, Institutional Advancement at Wistar at [email protected] for more information.

Thank you for all of your support over the years, and we hope you will continue to be part of our efforts at Wistar.

With deepest gratitude,
Kate
