Content warning: sexual assault
On June 14th we, South Philly Punks With Lunch (PWL), became aware that one of our long-standing members had sexually assaulted and engaged in an ongoing abusive relationship with another member of the harm reduction community. This other community member has also been organizing with us for years including tabling alongside us, fundraising for us, making outreach kits, and providing overdose education.
This member who was named in the allegations has been removed from PWL as of June 24th.
The survivor has made requests of the person who caused harm, reprinted here verbatim:
admit you sexually assaulted me
admit you’ve been lying to me for years, manipulating me, gaslighting me, coercing intimacy, weaponizing ignorance and using my mental health as a scapegoat
explain how they caused harm/pain, and
make a plan to change these behaviors
Punks with Lunch stands in solidarity with these asks and are encouraging the person who caused these egregious harms to take accountability.
We recognize that the removal of this person should have been immediate upon learning this from our community member, as well as immediately acknowledging the severity of harm done. We are working to correct our mistakes. We realize our engagement in this process so far has lacked transparency, been piecemeal, hesitant, and slow. This caused the person who received harm and others to suffer additional harms and a lack of security. We deeply apologize for this, and are working to course correct.
We are working with a transformative justice facilitator and are moving towards a transformative justice process to better align our actions with the needs of the person harmed, the needs of the broader harm reduction community, and our own values.
The former PWL member in question was receiving a $500 monthly stipend from Punks With Lunch to support their participation in PWL and their long-term recovery. We have decided to transition this person off our funding over a 2-3 month period to allow time for another source of income to be secured. They are not participating in any outreach, public or private PWL activity, or involved in any decision-making.
The survivor was recently fired from their job. Our inability to meet their needs and our mishandling of the harm was a major factor to the conditions under which this occurred. We have provided rent support to support the survivor, and are working with a transformative justice facilitator and a coalition of other harm reduction organizations towards a continued centering of that survivor’s needs.
The former PWL member in question has yet to meet the survivor’s demands, so we are taking the actions outlined above to encourage these demands to be met. We are committed to building internal group knowledge, infrastructure, and external support to prevent ourselves from repeating these errors again. We are addressing the culture of misogyny, toxic masculinity, r**e apologism, and ableism within our organization. We are continuing to strategize towards accountability for the person in question, as well as for individual members of our organization, and our organization as a whole; and towards a healing and transformative outcome for all parties.
