This Transgender History Month, we're shining a light on an organization that has propelled trans progress, justice, and equality forward...🏳️‍⚧️

This highlight features the Transgender Law Center - the largest national, trans-led organization in the country, working to set all people free and champion the right of every trans and gender-nonconforming person to live freely, safely, and authentically.

TLC was co-founded in 2002 by Chris Daley and Dylan Vade as a California-focused project of the National Center for Le***an Rights, incorporating as its own nonprofit in 2004. Since then, its precedent-setting litigation has protected trans rights in employment, prison conditions, education, immigration, and healthcare - including Ash Whitaker's landmark Title IX case securing restroom access for trans students, and Shiloh Quine's case winning gender-affirming healthcare access in prison.

TLC's leadership has made history too: in 2015, Kris Hayashi became the first trans person of color to lead an organization of TLC's size. In 2023, Shelby Chestnut - descended from the Assiniboine tribe of Montana - became the first Native trans person to helm a national LGBTQ organization.

Through programs like Positively Trans, Black Trans Circles, and the Disability Project, TLC continues building a trans-led movement rooted in community, healing, and liberation for all. TRANS LIVES MATTER! 🩷🩵

This Transgender History Month, we're shining a light on people & moments that have propelled trans progress, justice, and equality forward...🏳️‍⚧️

This highlight features Zaya Wade - a transgender advocate and public figure representing a younger generation of trans voices focused on visibility and acceptance.

Zaya came out as transgender in 2020 at age 12, and her family's public support - including a red carpet debut with her father, NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade, and stepmother Gabrielle Union - made her one of the most visible young trans people in the country almost overnight.

That same year, she was named to The Advocate's Women of the Year and The Root's Young Futurists lists. Since then, she's built a modeling career that includes a Miu Miu runway debut, campaigns with major brands, and a Seventeen magazine cover. In 2024, she was honored as an Out100 Groundbreaker and co-launched Translatable with her father, an online resource centering trans youth and families of color. In 2025, she was named to GLAAD's 20 Under 20 list.

Now in college and still building her platform, Zaya continues to show up for her community - turning award recognitions into an actual nonprofit, and a growing career into a bigger microphone for the youth coming up behind her.

On her birthday, we remember Marsha P. Johnson exactly as she lived: flowers in her hair, joy in her step, and a fierce love for her community.

Icon, trailblazer, and one of the forces behind Stonewall, she led with kindness and refused to shrink herself for anyone's comfort. One of the founding mothers of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, she turned her own struggle into a lifeline for everyone around her, giving everything she had.

"Pay it no mind." That was Marsha's answer to anyone who questioned who she was, and her life's philosophy. We carry her legacy forward... still here, still fighting. Happy Birthday, Marsha!🌸🏳️‍🌈🎂

This Transgender History Month, we're shining a light on the people & moments that have propelled trans visibility, justice, and equality forward...🏳️‍⚧️

This highlight features Billy Tipton - a jazz musician and bandleader who lived and performed as a man for more than 50 years. Starting in the early 1930s, he built a life and a career on his own terms.

As the Billy Tipton Trio, he became a respected fixture on the jazz circuit, known for tight, energetic performances. In 1957, the trio recorded two albums for Tops Records that sold well enough to earn offers as a hotel house band and a four-album deal - both of which he turned down, choosing instead to settle in Spokane, Washington, where he spent his later years mentoring young musicians and working as a talent broker.

Alongside his music, he built a home with his partner Kathleen "Kitty" Kelly, with whom he adopted and raised three sons.

For decades, he was simply Billy - a musician, a mentor, a father, a partner. It wasn't until his death in 1989 that the world learned he had been assigned female at birth, and his private life became a sensationalized headline he never got the chance to respond to on his own terms.

His story is a complicated one, and it reminds us that not every trans person in history got to choose visibility - some simply lived, quietly and fully, in the identity that was true to them. That, too, is part of our history worth honoring.

Today is Transgender Flag Day and we're honoring the woman who created it: Monica Helms... 🏳️‍⚧️

A U.S. Navy veteran, author, and activist, Monica designed the Transgender Pride Flag in 1999. Light blue for boys, pink for girls, and white for those transitioning or living outside the binary - colors chosen to represent the full diversity of gender.

The design is intentional in another way too: no matter which way it's flown, it's always "correct." Just like trans identities - worthy of love and acceptance, exactly as they are.

This Transgender History Month, we're proud to keep telling stories like Monica's - the people and moments that remind us trans lives deserve to be seen, supported, and celebrated. TRANS LIVES MATTER! 🩷🩵

This Transgender History Month, we're shining a light on the people and moments that have propelled trans visibility, justice, and equality forward.

This highlight features Christine Jorgensen - the first widely known transgender woman in American history. In December 1952, news broke that she'd had gender-affirming surgery in Denmark, and it became a national headline almost overnight. Suddenly she wasn't just Christine anymore - she was a symbol, a scandal, a curiosity, depending on who you asked. Most people would've run from that kind of attention. She didn't. She turned it into a platform, touring college campuses and talk shows for decades, and using every interview to push back on the idea that being trans meant being broken. In her 1967 autobiography, she put it plainly: the answer was never punishment or shame, it was the freedom to live.

It wasn't easy, and it wasn't always fair to her. But her willingness to be seen, at real personal cost, opened doors so that many people in our community could walk through them, boldly and unapologetically...
