Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the cultures, histories, resilience, and lasting contributions of Indigenous peoples in our communities.
Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities share an important connection. Many Indigenous nations recognized diverse gender identities and expressions long before European colonization.
For some Indigenous people, Two-Spirit is a cultural identity tied to tradition, gender, spirituality, and community. It is specific to Indigenous cultures and is not a general term for all LGBTQ+ people.
Colonization suppressed many of these traditions, and its effects continue today. Recognizing this day means acknowledging that history and supporting Indigenous LGBTQ+ people in living openly and free from discrimination.
At DVLF, we believe everyone deserves dignity and respect. That means learning from Indigenous voices, especially Indigenous LGBTQ+ people, and standing with them. 🏳️🌈
