Recognizing how deeply trauma impacts communities and their recovery, the Diocese of the Horn of Africa, partnered with ARDF to implement a trauma-informed care training for a variety of professionals, using the Trauma Healing Institute's programs. During the training, participants gained access to essential psychosocial support, compassionate listening, and trauma-informed care provided by trained community service providers and gained the skills to lead such efforts in their own communities and work places. The trainings, which occurred in two parts, were a great success, with nearly 20 people trained with a vision to build the capacity to reach up to 525,000 people in 25 districts over two years! 🌏💛🌱

“This initiative is unique, as no previous activity has combined religious teachings with the healing of emotional wounds in such an integrated manner. Bringing together trainers from religious, health, and educational backgrounds in one program has filled us with joy and hope for our future lives.”

Stronger together. 💚

What a joy it was to gather with Trauma Healing facilitators and ministry partners from across North America at Stronger Together last week! As our time came to a close, Jay Baylor, our U.S. Regional Coordinator, sent us out with this benediction.

Whether you were in the room, joined online, or are part of our community of practice from wherever you serve, these words are for you too. Receive them as a blessing over you and the healing ministry God has given you:

I pray for an increase in your connection and intimacy with the Lord.
Increase in your capacity to receive love and give love.
Increase in endurance and perseverance to bear up when the load is heavy.
Increase in abiding and resting in the Lord's presence.
Increase in boldness.
Increase in creativity.
Increase in grace and mercy.
Increase in compassion.
Increase in anointing for healing.
Increase in faith to see miracles, signs, and wonders.

I bless you to bring good news to the poor.
I bless you to bind up the brokenhearted.
I bless you to proclaim liberty to the captives.
I bless you to open the prison to those who are bound.

"Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen." (Jude 1:24–25)

We’re so thankful for the experiences with the amazing folks at Stronger Together, our North American Community of Practice gathering in Philadelphia.

We are learning, laughing, lamenting, growing, connecting, reflecting, and innovating…together. It’s the first time in many years we’ve gathered like this in person in North America and we’re loving every moment.

🌱In his day-one session, "Trauma, Spiritual Formation, and the Wounds of Christ," Fuller Theological Seminary's Dr. David Wang shared these words from Dan Allender: "Healing from trauma is not about resolution. Rather, it is about telling a truer story of your life, one that holds both the beauty and the brokenness."

These photos are a glimpse of that truer story: one we're discovering together.

Over the next three days, we'll worship together, share stories, learn from one another, and be encouraged for the work ahead. Meet Esbon. 🌱

Esbon Umbo is a 23-year-old student from Lemon Gaba in Juba, South Sudan. In 2018, what started as a simple eye irritation turned out to be a serious condition that needed urgent surgery. Like so many families struggling through South Sudan's poverty crisis, his family couldn't afford it. By September 2019, Esbon had lost his sight.

The loss went far deeper than his eyes. For three long months he shut himself indoors, convinced that anyone who visited had come to mock him. Anger became his shield.

"Shame kept me from associating with others. I felt useless, voiceless, and invisible in community gatherings. I could not speak because I believed no one would accept my opinion."

The darkness was emotional, spiritual, and mental. He felt like all hope was gone. But his story didn't end there.

In 2024, Esbon joined a Trauma Healing Institute healing group led by the Bible Society in South Sudan, hosted by his local church. There, he discovered something he thought he had lost forever: God still loved him, just as he was. Slowly, Esbon embraced who he is now and stepped back into the journey of life.

"God had another plan. In the midst of my despair, I found hope again through a Trauma Healing Program. That program renewed me. It reminded me of the promises of God — that even in the valley of the shadow of death, He is with us."

Trauma Healing Facilitators, be encouraged. Behind every closed door is someone who believes they're invisible, and your circle may be the first place they're truly seen. 💛
