It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of one of the most influential members of our organization’s history, Richard J Cyzewski on December 31, 2025 at the age of 95. A true pillar of our community, “Richie Ski” as he was affectionately known, dedicated his life to his family, friends and members of Saturnalian NYA uplifting those around him and spreading joy.
Richie Ski joined Saturnalian NYA for the 1971 New Years Day parade, making him the longest tenured member in Saturnalian history with 56 years of membership. From the very beginning, his passion and commitment were evident. Throughout his tenure, Ski played a pivotal role in numerous initiatives, leaving an undeniable mark on our organization’s success. He was not only a loyal member, but also a mentor and friend to many, always ready to lend a listening ear or share his expertise. Ski transcended generations of mummers in which he was admired and loved by all.
In 1984, Ski was inducted into the Saturnalian Hall Of Fame and in 1987, he was inducted in the Fancy Brigade Veterans Hall of Fame. He was later awarded the coveted “Lifetime member” status of Saturnalian. Because of Ski’s devotion and consistency, the organization decided to honor him in 2011 by renaming our “Member Of The Year” award in his honor. An award annually presented to a member who “exemplifies the characteristics of a Saturnalian.” A perfect tribute to a man who lived those characteristics day in and day out. 2018 marked the clubs 50th anniversary and a beautiful celebration was had at the Sugar House Casino which the club honored it’s history. With many speeches though out the evening, Ski was tapped to close out the night bringing joy and smiles to all that attended. In 2020 the organization was awarded 1st place in the Fancy Brigade division for the first time since 1986. The serenade was an extra special event because not only was the club celebrating this remarkable win, it was also an opportunity to honor another unprecedented feat, our first 50 year member, Richie Ski. An event that united all members past and present and of course , there was Ski in the middle of it all! On May 19, 2024 was another special day for the organization. The club decided to rename the building to “Richie “Ski” Cyzewski Hall.”
Another event bringing members from past to present to celebrate a man that has given so much to all the men and woman that he shared his time with.
Beyond his club accomplishments, Richie was known for his kindness, warmth, and unwavering support for fellow members and their families. He believed in the power of teamwork and fostered an environment where everyone felt valued. At a meeting, a rehearsal or a bingo night, you could count on Ski to shout the phrase, “Is everybody happy?” A special sentiment to remind everyone to enjoy there time shared together.
As we mourn this tremendous loss, we are reminded that Ski’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched. We encourage everyone to come together to honor his memory and reflect on the lessons he imparted.
Ski served his family, his country, his friends, his fellow members and all whom he encountered with grace, warmth and love. We will sorely miss a great man who has given us so much.
We love and miss you Ski.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Maggie, daughter Colleen and grandsons Cullen and Aiden during this difficult time.
