The four Gale sisters, Adeona, Hannah, Cecilia, and Ruth, were accomplished dancers and often described as handsome and talented, having toured the country to great acclaim before arriving in Philadelphia. Tragically, on September 14, 1861, while performing in a production of The Tempest at Philadelphia's Continental Theatre, a gas jet ignited a dancer's gauzy costume and the fire spread rapidly backstage, claiming the lives of all four sisters. The daughters of actor and balloonist George Burcher Gale, their lives and artistry are remembered today at Mount Moriah Cemetery (Section 36, Lot 77), where their gravestone bears the epitaph: "They lived, they loved, they perished, side by side."
