The four Gale sisters, Adeona, Hannah, Cecilia, and Ruth, were accomplished dancers and often described as handsome and talented, having toured the country to great acclaim before arriving in Philadelphia. Tragically, on September 14, 1861, while performing in a production of The Tempest at Philadelphia's Continental Theatre, a gas jet ignited a dancer's gauzy costume and the fire spread rapidly backstage, claiming the lives of all four sisters. The daughters of actor and balloonist George Burcher Gale, their lives and artistry are remembered today at Mount Moriah Cemetery (Section 36, Lot 77), where their gravestone bears the epitaph: "They lived, they loved, they perished, side by side."

Next time you visit a cemetery, take a look around. You might be surprised at what you find. All kinds of wildlife can be found among the headstones.

Today, on the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we remember William Thomas McKnight, Jr., known to friends and family as Bill and "Mac" to his fellow paratroopers. A West Philadelphia native, Bill joined the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, completed jump school at Fort Benning, and shipped out to England in late 1943 to prepare for the liberation of France. In the early hours of June 6th, 1944, he parachuted into Normandy, only to be killed in action just two days later. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Bill is interred at Mount Moriah (Section K, Range 7, Lot 3), one of the many World War II veterans whose service and sacrifice are honored within our grounds.
