Happy Independence Day from the Friendly Sons & Daughters of St. Patrick!

Five years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, our Society was formed, right here in Philadelphia! Among our founding and early members were remarkable patriots who helped shape the budding United States, including Commodore John Barry, widely regarded as the Father of the American Navy; Thomas FitzSimons, a signer of the U.S. Constitution; and Stephen Moylan, a trusted general who served under George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

Their courage, leadership, and commitment to the ideals of liberty helped build the nation we celebrate today. We are honored and proud to celebrate their legacy while working to strengthen the enduring friendship between Ireland and the United States.

We wish our members and a friends a safe, joyful, and meaningful Independence Day🇺🇸

"From the earliest sparks of the Revolution to the modern era, the Irish have been instrumental in defending, shaping, and leading the United States." We're proud that many leaders central to the American revolution were early members of our Society 🇮🇪🇺🇸

This week, as the United States celebrates its Semiquincentennial, marking 250 years of independence, the eyes of the world turn to Philadelphia. As millions gather in the very streets where our country was founded, it is a profound moment to reflect on the diverse tapestry of people who built this nation. Central to that American story are the immense contributions of Irish immigrants and the children of the diaspora.

From the earliest sparks of the Revolution to the modern era, the Irish have been instrumental in defending, shaping, and leading the United States.

The Fight for Independence

When the Founding Fathers gathered in Philadelphia to sever ties with the British Crown, the Irish were already deeply embedded in the fight for liberty. Three signers of the Declaration of Independence, James Smith, George Taylor, and Matthew Thornton, were born in Ireland. In addition to these three, five others were of Irish descent: Charles Carroll, Thomas McKean, George Read, Edward Rutledge, and Thomas Lynch, Jr., meaning 8 of the 56 signers proudly shared this heritage. Alongside them, Charles Thomson, the indispensable Secretary of the Continental Congress, hailed from County Derry. On the water, County Wexford native Commodore John Barry became known as the Father of the American Navy, valiantly defending the shores of the fledgling republic...
