With deep gratitude and sadness, we share that Double Trellis Food Initiative is winding down operations and has ceased meal production.

From the beginning we have struggled in a multitude of ways, from the challenges of building a small non-profit, to the governmental and philanthropic funding issues like many other amazing organizations are facing. We have also experienced extenuating circumstances far beyond our control.

Over the years, our team, partners and funders have come together to grow, cook, and share food in ways that nourished both body and community.

In addition, we want to extend a special thank you to all the volunteers, many of which continually returned, for all your help and support to create all of these meals.

We leave with:
- having created over 165,000 dignified meals
- young adults having learned job skills and earned certifications
- incredible relationships with so many of you

We do not consider this a failure, but a proof of concept: with the correct support systems and funding, there is a better way to offer meal production to our most vulnerable populations.

While we recognize this marks the end of Double Trellis Food Initiative in its current structure, we hope that this is not the end of creating dignified food for all. We all still care deeply about our community here in Philadelphia, and will continue to plug into the work informally, where we can. Thank you for growing with us and supporting us--just like a double trellis.

🍅 Tomato season has been back in full swing with all these gorgeous heirlooms (and slicers and romas) from

This time of year, they end up being a backbone of a lot of the meals we make - almost all of the stewed and roasted tomatoes are coming in straight from the farm and truly add a ton of depth to simple sauces.

Flavor starts in the soil.

8/22: Thyme chicken with sweet & sour peppers
8/23: Fajita bowl
8/27: Carrot curry (this one is a real sleeper dish!)
8/28: Goulash

The middle of the summer has some beautiful things and some tough things. This summer has been really hot but that doesn’t stop our friends at from growing incredible produce and always saving so much fresh food from the dumpster. Always grateful for helping us making these meals cost less than a $1 a piece!

Whew - the heat is here but the meals keep going.

Had a bit of a short week earlier this month due to a massive fire on 48th street but still managed to get out an average of 337 meals a day!

🥬 Whew, May was so exciting for us here in the kitchen. The bounty of spring is starting to make an appearance through ramps, spring peas and other beautiful greens.

🔢Additionally exciting, we set a monthly record by cooking 6,146 meals in 19 cook days. The team is firing on all cylinders and making some of the best food we can on a day to day basis!

One of our new spring partners this year is none other than . We’ve been connected and supporting each other in various capacities (we still use that giant pot!) but finally, we got to work more intentionally.

Margaux and the team have built a really incredible community hub in Kensington and it’s amazing to see them grow and continuing to make kids smile!

A little bit more about :

“The mission of The Sunday LOVE Project is to share food amongst those experiencing food insecurity in our community.

Our efforts aim to ease the burden of choosing to pay bills and feeding our families. For the first 7 years, we focused on serving those experiencing homelessness. Recently through Greater Goods, our free grocery store, we have shifted gears to ensure our parents are able to feed their children.

We are a liaison between a hungry, struggling mind and a focused, nourished soul.”

150,000 FREE MEALS!! (2,576 in this post)

🫂 Please share amongst your network to help support!

❤️ We love a nice round number and we love a community that supports itself.

🔢 Since 2020, we have cooked over 150,000 meals given free of cost all across Philadelphia. Almost 130,000 of them have been since 3/23 when we expanded.

🙏 We extend our gratitude to the folks around us that support our collective work, our partners, our friends and the universe for guiding us in this weird world of 2025.

🗣️ Please consider becoming a monthly sustainer if you aren’t already. $20 a month feeds a family of 5.

🤲 We certainly understand financial constraints so volunteering with us or sharing this post amongst your network is a huge help as well!

2,734 FREE MEALS!

Now that the ramps are here, spring has officially started!

🌱 If you haven’t had a ramp before, they are an amazing wild leek, part of the allium family, that has a really short window for foraging. They are usually found along the Appalachian region along the northeast and up into Canada. They have a really amazing blend of garlic and onion notes without being overpowering!

We made our ramps from into a pesto but there are a ton of other ways to use it!

Swinging into that interesting transition from winter flavors to spring flavors. Balancing some of the weather and our ingredient selection has been interesting but were always down to clown around here.

In addition to our normal production and partnerships, we also got to hang out with our dear friends, at their event on the 19th! We had a blast and hope you did too!
