"More than a week after catastrophic flooding hit Libya, more than 9,000 people are still missing. In the city of Derna, where the devastation is the worst, officials are warning that one-fifth of the city has been destroyed.
We’re working closely with our partners in Libya to support families through this unimaginable tragedy and ensure that survivors access the lifesaving care and assistance that they need.
The stories and images from Derna are nightmarish. Survivors recall hearing the sound of an explosion as the dams burst open, releasing a torrent of water into the city. In mere minutes, entire neighborhoods were violently swept away, leaving nothing but rubble and disease-ridden floodwaters. Families had no time to escape.
The scale of devastation is simply unfathomable.
Now, as survivors face incredible trauma and loss, they’re also struggling to meet their basic needs in the wake of this disaster. Thousands of families have been displaced and are now reliant on humanitarian assistance for shelter, food, and medical care.
Access to clean water has been seriously jeopardized, and we fear that the stagnant floodwaters will trigger an outbreak of deadly waterborne diseases like cholera.
Our teams have been engaging with local partners in Libya since day one. We’re working closely with their teams to support their lifesaving recovery efforts however we can. Our main priorities at this moment are ensuring that survivors have access to food, medical care, hygiene kits, and clean water."
